Ok I am looking to purchase a new Laptop computer. However, it seems all the new computers are coming with Vista. Anyone here use it or have an opinion of it?

I have heard people are having problems switching thier older printers, web cams and stuff over to Vista.

Suggestions/opinions please

Thanks

Glen

I've had it a couple of months I guess. It's not as bad as some would have you believe... my only concern is the overall operating system speed is noticeably slower, with boot ups in the am pathetically slow.

I just tried moments ago to load a 3rd party program that I've had for a few yrs.(A calendar/scheduling program) It was not compatible. All my other programs and peripherals are pretty current so no other other issues.

I tried it when it first came out and went back to XP within a month but they have come out with a service pack since then. It may have fixed the problems I had.

What problems did you have if you don't mind me asking?

Mostly program compatiablity......some of my programs at work wouldn't run properly and home my games didn't work. I didn't have any hardware issues.

Thanks. I am more worried about hardware compatibility than program.

If you like the computer but not the Vista software. Just reformat the hard drive and put XP, Win 2000, Linux or whatever other OS you want on it.

My last computer just seemed to get virused, me messing with registry and systems settings etc and chronic crashing etc. Fact was I had a 6 year old computer that I ram'd up just to get by.....

Nothing more satisfying than doing a total XP reformat and new start. New computer no issues so far knock on wood.

I am by no means an expert on Vista, but from what I gather, it has improved over the past year. With the updates that Microsoft has been working on, they have made some decent changes since its inception. However most think it has a long way to go before actually being a stable system.

I think some have had anywhere from huge problems and frustrations to some just having a few small issues here and there.

Xp's sp3 should be out soon (if not allready). I'm currently taking a Vista/XP class for my MSFT Certification. from what i've learned so far if you have a printer thats 5 years or older (this is what my teacher told me, I'm a Mac user my self so i dont know for sure) is that it wont work w/ vista. so i'd take that into consideration.

The link below will take to a tool that Microsoft provides, that lets you check your hardware to see if it will be compatible with Vista... when I ran it, I learned that my HP scanner and one my HP printers (the inkjet) would not work with that OS... the HP laser printer would work just fine, my webcam would work, my wireless rechargeable mouse will work... but I like my scanner and that inkjet printer, I don't wanna have to mothball them...

I hope this is some help to you...

Doesn't the part in bold automatically disqualify you from Microsoft certification ;)

A LOT of companies are putting out driver updates which make the printers and such compatiable with Vista, so just because your getting a not compattiable at the moment doesn't mean that if you installed the new drivers it wouldn't then be compattiable. I'd check with HP to see if they ahve new drivers if so your in the clear...

Another quick question. I'm going to be building my brother a new computer and I can put parts together and make it work - I've built my last two computers.

What are everyone's thoughts on 64 bit Operating Systems? I'd like to go 64 bit simply because he's going to need as much ram as he can get to run five instances of World of Warcraft on one machine. But I'm unsure of the compatibility of the OSs with hardware/software and have heard that Microsoft is going to stop supporting XP mid year.

i haven'te heard they are going to stop supporting XP. i've heard you are no longer going to be able to go out and buy a computer with XP soon (or its already happened) but there are rumors of MS scraping vista for windows 7 (code named)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7 (keep in mind when Vista was starting to get legs stretched and images came out it looked like XP, so thats why it looks like vista still)

You can no longer buy a retail computer with XP on it but I still order them with XP for business use (from Dell).

I haven't heard anything about stopping support but I doubt it happens because alot of people have switched back to XP from Vista.

Cool, thanks for easing my fears on no XP support Yeag and Kid.
