Murray's Fumble Issues - Fixable?

I agree with this. It is for sure fixable if he is willing to fix it and if the coaching staff pushes him to fix it. His attitude of not changing a thing ultimately led to his biggest fumble of the year vs the Packers with out playoff lives on the line. Not cool.

The easiest way to fix it would be to replace him with Todd Gurley. Gurley fumbled about 1 in 170 compared to most other college backs in the 1 in 50 range.

Tony Dorsett would not have survived the internet if he was playing today. He fumbled the ball once every 37.0 touches during his career. He had 9 seasons when he fumbled the ball more than Murray did this season. He had 3 seasons with 10 or more fumbles.

Wow, thanks for this info, I did not realize he fumbled that often or that many times in a season.
Gives a different perspective on things.

The team has pointed out the ball security issues in the past. I don't think it's a matter of the team not identifying it and taking steps to correct it.

4 years at OU Murray did not have issues with fumbling and had 0 fumbles his senior year.

You solved the riddle! They have been watching so much glory years tape Murray started carrying the rock like Dorsett!

No it doesnt. It just means that both guys were loose with the ball. It doesn't excuse it.
Plus guys in that era actually form tackled, which may have produced a few more.

Overblown ?? His fumble in the Green Bay playoff game could of cost us a trip to the Super Bowl ? We probably go on to beat Green Bay - given the momentum in the game...and we already beat Seattle in Seattle AND Seattle played poorly against the Packers and were very beatable. That's overblown ? really ?
One play... and a good one by Peppers. It happens. Yes it's overblown.

Honestly its not even his fumbling as the issue. Its the fact that its at the worst possible times.

I lol'ed at this. Now we are giving Murray the Romo treatment. For years, all we heard was that Romo only throw's INT's at the wrong time. Now it's Murray's turn. These blanket statement's are funny and if you'd ask most coaches, I believe they'd tell you there is no good time to turn over the ball.

Seems to me by his actions that he refuses the carry the ball differently.

He's always going to be at a high risk to get that thing knocked out carrying it like he does.

My biggest beef about the Murray fumbles last season is that they were mostly due to form and were correctible.

It's still basic football. So IMO it does put a different perspective on the statistics part of it. If it's a problem, change so that it isn't a problem. Plain and simple.

Yes it has, it just became more evident this year because A) the higher workload meant a higher volume of fumbles and B) we lost a bunch more of them than we had in the past.

He could fix it, but it would mean changing his running style, and I have doubts about whether or not he will.
1 in 2011 (lost 0), 3 in 2012 (lost only 2) 3 in 2013 (lost only 1) and 6 in 2014. I will say this again. IT HAS NOT BEEN A CONSISTENT ISSUE THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. Period. Such revisionist history. Every down backs usually have a handful of fumbles per year. Look at some of the best backs #s you'll be surprised.

He hasn't fixed it yet, and fumbled in the playoffs.

I'm ready to move on.

He swings his arms to generate speed. That puts the ball in a bad position away from his body

IMO, he made a conscience decision this year to do that even more despite the fumble risk. It appears that he believes that he is significantly more effective with this running style and will take the fumbles.

Sometimes, players can't fix it. I mean, there have been some really great players who have fumbled too much but, as you say, the results they produce just make the fumbling issue acceptable. Eric Dickerson is an example of this IMO. Not saying Murray is Dickerson but just as example. I think what you say here is true.

and yet prior to this season fumbling has not been a big issue for Murray.

I think on one of the games, the announcers said, he carries it and swings his arms, as that is the only way he feels he can get up to speed. Which he seemed slower than the previous years.
All that needs to be worked on. Maybe it's time for a new RB's coach.
Or he needs not to drink all that water the night and morning before the games, could that cause him to be slower on game day.

Something is different as to cause the fumbles more so this year than in the past. Also need to take into account, this was his first full season.
