Mutually Parting Ways with Kellen Moore

Many people might have been surprised when the Cowboys mutually parted ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore following the end of the 2022 season. After all, he was at the helm of leading a top offense in back-to-back years.

In 2021, Moore led the Cowboys to the number-one scoring offense. That unit averaged 31.2 points per game. Last season, Dallas averaged 27.5 points per game, fourth in the NFL. But Cowboys fans know how predictable the offense was at times, running on 2nd and long or throwing two-yard passes on third and long. That's why, to them, the move was needed.

Dallas hasn't gone anywhere in the playoffs in almost three decades. Recently, they lost in the Divisional Round to the 49ers last season. Things needed to change because it simply wasn't working. And the decision to have McCarthy calling plays can work. He called the plays in Green Bay (for all but one season) using a west coast offense. The former Packers head coach also led them to a Super Bowl as the play caller in 2010. A positive in the offensive change could lead to the Cowboys throwing more on early downs, as seen by this chart below. The Packers ranked toward the top of the league under McCarthy on first-down throws.

Another positive from Mike McCarthy calling plays. #DallasCowboys

Most likely it was a scapegoat move on Moore. Especially since he was picked up so quickly by the Chargers for their up and coming stud at QB.

It was a great move for Moore where his success there with a top 5 offense will escalate him much faster to a HC opportunity.

The Cowboys have proven this era to be more of a dead-end for coaches this era. It’s where their career ends or last stop for most of our HC and none of our asst coaches I recall have been promoted to HC on another team since Jimmy left.

Wow. The Kellen Moore slobbering is so nauseating, Greg! Kellen was clearly predictable, hence why our Offense struggled against the better Defenses in the league, especially during the playoffs. It definitely was time to move on past Kellen Moore.

Give Mike McCarthy some credit. He's taken the Cowboys to back-to-back 12-5 seasons which has not been duplicated since the Cowboys early 90s Super Bowl years. McCarthy has also improved in his coaching personnel since he joined the Cowboys 3 seasons ago. You act like he and his coaches are a bunch of bums. Sheesh.

Let's just see...you negative post everything that remotely relates to a negative Dak Prescott and then don't miss a stopping person between him and Jerry Jones, except to place blame on all still in place....no matter what is involved.

Agreed America's Cowboy...it's troll time. :starspin:

That’s the beauty of this. We are going to find out who this was more about.

If Moore was a fraud he will be exposed . And we will see if McCarthy can make the improvement needed. Can’t ask for much more high drama than that.

Let’s hope our issues aren’t more about our QB.

Some Cowboy fans will need to be rooting as hard this year against the Chargers , their offense and Hubert as they will be rooting for our offense under McCarthy to take Prescott to the next level.

Who’s been holding this offense back against the better teams and defenses? Was it our OC or our QB? Can’t make this type of drama up any better than this .

And while McCarthys overall record at Green Bay was impressive calling the plays he did have one of the most Elite QB’s of this era.

In the end only won 1 Super Bowl and was ultimately fired. And no one hired him until we came a calling. And even with his record we didn’t want him to call our plays or take over our offense.

Sorry if I’m a little suspect . But even after the decision not to resign Moore, McCarthy said he had intentions to run the ball more. But all of the indications is we are going to pass the ball more with our Texas Coast offense.

Again, I’m already on the edge of my chair for the high drama to unfold this year. Good news is with our escalating defense it could be enough for our third consecutive playoff appearance under McCarthy and maybe even another 12 win season assuming our QB can stay healthy.

We shall see how it plays out in the playoffs if or when we face a better team or defense.

Let’s hope the mark of this run doesn’t become the most successful regular season team without a championship game appearance in Cowboys history.

Good news is regardless the lack of playoff success won’t prevent Jethro and Son from resigning both Prescott and McCarthy to continue the historic run.

McCarthy was successful in Green Bay for 2 reasons.
number one. He had a great quarterback.

#2 his offensive coach perfected a holding technique that the NFL allowed him to get away with for years.

once the NFL stopped GB from using the holding technique (because other teams finally began to use it themselves) he had two dismal years and was fired.
We'll see what Mike Mccarthy can do this season.

I still think that what got Moore fired was the playcalling late in games when the team had a lead. There were just waaaaay too many 3 and outs, frequently started by an obvious Zeke run up the middle for no yards on 1st down. The bomb play on 3rd down against Jacksonville where a simple run would have ended the game was just icing on the cake.

Also, as always, the offense wasn't that great last year. On a per drive basis, it was middle of the pack. The scoring output was supercharged the last 2 years by all of the defensive takeaways which had nothing to do with Kellen Moore.

The Parcells era had a bunch of assistants who went on to be head coaches including Sean Payton.

This is silly but I know this is what this season is about for some.

It’s like Bill Bellicheat in Cleveland. He wasn’t the coach there he was in New England and in order for him to get there he had to get fired.

Kellen had his flaws that he has to shore up. Him getting fired probably makes him a better coordinator. This team went as far as it could with Kellen. He may be the last piece needed for the Chargers…both can be true.

Plus not everything is done in a vacuum. Every team is different considering strengths and weaknesses. Kellen Moore did some good things here and should improve on what he’s built for himself as a coordinator so far. Now he’ll be in a little different situation with a RB like Ekeler on top of the QB and receiving threats. So I’m sure that offense will look different than what we’ve been seeing him do with this one.

And to this day I still blame Parcells for being one of those guys who purposely stuck it to Jerry Jones not letting him know that he was intending to leave early and quit like he always does to allow Jerry to go to Sean Payton and let him know he's the successor to not leave early if they would have had a plan in place we could have kept Sean Payton I blame bill Parcells 100% and I will never let him live it down I have no respect for the man at all being the fact that he was a ex giant NFC East hated rival then he comes here and basically starts something and doesn't finish it just runs I don't wanna hear that Jerry chased him off he literally quit and he did it in a way where it purposefully kept Jerry from being able to retain Sean Payton.

I agree. Parcells was needed. And it ended up going well for this team because it got us from the gutter of the Campo era. But he really did burn us. Can't be stated enough. From his insistent on "Parcells guys" to letting Payton walk...hell he almost screwed up even having Romo to begin with. Insistence on Marcus Spears(Love the guy but not the best move) in the 1st round. Then come to find out he wanted Spears first over Ware....

idc about numbers...We've had great offensive numbers on a consistant basis since 2007

I care about situational football.....and he just like Garrett (albiet better than Garrett) had major issues

we get a turnover, start moving the ball running or passing we have momentum and he bust out a trick play that goes for negative yardage and he did it MULTIPLE times

Kellen fumbles momentum too much...and part of being an OC means you know what plays work and what dont....that quick screen has worked maybe 3 times in a 17 game season and he STILL calls it

Also against some of the better defenses his lack of creativity can show....run up the middle....run basic pass concepts...no motion

hes WILDLY inconsistant

I agree. This is exactly my position. There’s no point in debating it now, before the season. It will play out this year and we’ll see who was right or wrong.
