My (biased) thoughts on Martellus Bennett

It's kinda funny how people are generally in favor of a BPA strategy until it actually happens.

Funny you mention that, considering we passed on the BPA withour very first pick.

That door swings both ways.

It's debatable, really considering that Felix Jones went about where he was expected to go. Jenkins certainly was the BPA and so was Bennett imo

There were no reaches and we picked players that fit our scheme very well.

Debatable? Jerry Jones admitted himself Mendenhall was rated higher on their own freaking board!

Find me one scouting report that rates Jones higher than Mendenhall.

Gosselin (whom many consider the be all end all in this evaluation business) had him Mendenhall rated as the TENTH BEST PLAYER.

Just because you choose to debate it doesn't make it debatable (at least on any rational level).

This is a much better pick than most realize.

I know what Jesse would say:)

Can he catch a ball thrown right in his hands on the goal line in a big playoff game? If so then he is an upgrade to Tuna's buffoon Fasano. Actually a guy with his size and leaping ability will be a monster in short yardage goal line situations. Throw it high and let him get it!!!!

But was Jones a reach? No. Just because he may have been a higher rated player does not necessarily means he's a better fit here.

For example, everyone would agee that Jeremy Shockey is more talented than Kevin Boss. One could make the argument that Boss is overall a better fit for what the Giants want to do (and who could argue with the results?)

The question of whether Jones or Mendenhall is the better fit here is very much debateable.

you got into A&M?...how much did you pay them

thanks for your imput :)

I'll admit that I didn't want Bennett but after thinking about it, I think the Cowboys got the best value for the pick. It's starting to grow on me. I still want a WR though.

My only worry is his route running. Knowing A&M's offense he was probably asked to run a 10 yd hook pattern and wait at the same spot until the play was over.

Sig-worthy.

Don't you think it is debatable that Bennett was indeed the BPA considering we just traded Fasano a day ago?

To me that pick looks more like a need than BPA.

Actually, no. Mickey was saying all day that the team expected Tony Curtis to beat out Fasano this year anyway. In other words, Fasano was useless. And the team thought Curtis could actually play.

But to answer it another way, if Bennett had been picked two choices before us, would we still have taken a TE? I don't think so.

More evidence... We wanted a WR even more than a TE, but the value wasn't there, so we didn't force it.

Wade said they wanted Sweed at 61 but Pittsburgh took him at 54. There was no more value at WR. People forget there are 31 other teams drafting and plans change on the fly.

well those that whine usually whine regardless of what happens. it's just what they do.

i flippin hate the aggies........however, I was clapping and cheering this pick.

at 61 there wasnt much value left on the board without reaching.....I think we got the best and most complete TE in the draft.....

I think next year our 2 TE sets will be completely deadly.....since Bennett is a better player than Fasano.

Bennett was one of the top players in the country coming out of high school.

He played in that awful tamu offense and was the team's leading WR the past 2 seasons.

From his nfl.com anaylsis:

probably the only guy in the country to AVERAGE 5 knockdown blocks and 4 catches PER game...

This guy is 6'6" plus, weighs 250 and runs a 4.68. That is serious athleticism.

From an athleticism standpoint he is in another league from Fasano who was simply an adequate blocker who lacked any real outstanding abilities and was being passed on the depth chart by Tony Curtis.

I hate the pick, unless this guy is good enough to put Jason Witten on the bench...I will not hold my breath.

Fasano was not great by any stretch...he was a mistake to begin with, but he was serviceable. so we draft a short two years ago, trade him and another player for a 4th, and turn around and draft another TE. I can not envision how that makes sense to anyone.

Hate, hate, hate the pick.

Its not about replacing Witten. Its about giving Romo more weapons to chose which way you die. More options on scrambles. More ways to win. Run a 2 TE offense with two Wittens and it becomes more effective. You shoudl be excited.
