My Concerns

I continue speaking about the running game and some apparently believe I think we need to run more. That is not the case. So allow me to outline what is and why I am concerned.

I agree with the vast majority of what you said. My only disagreement is that this defensive strategy is very difficult for the vast majority of teams to pull off. The GIants invested heavily in the front four. They added beef up front that is difficult to move out of the way. I believe their Cbs are very good as well.

Most teams will not be able to stay in that defense without being gashed by the run or beat by guys like Terrence Williams or the TEs. Williams had his chances and didn't convert but it was pretty obvious he was a bit overwhelmed by his first game at the Stadium.

I do agree though...we NEED to commit to the run and we need to definitely commit to it in the redzone. I almost threw up when I saw that Romo had 33 passes in the first half...that is just insane.

Giants had the 31st ranked defense in the NFL last season. I know that's last year but let's not act like the Giants have anything but a middle of the road (at best) defense.

I agree with the OP, but I am holding out hope that the OL will gel and get better. However, I don't understand why the coaches can't do a better job of helping Dez escape the way the Giants defensed him. Dez is basically in the same spot on every play, making it easy for the defense to set up on him. Put in him motion, in the slot, in the backfield, move him around and not a standing target. The Cowboys are helping the opposing defense out.

I dunno...I kinda thought the 1st and goal stoppage from the 1/2 yard line was pretty impressive....I felt good about how the D played overall.

450 yards and 4 touchdowns to Eli Manning.

When you knew their only threat was the passing game.

That has me concerned.

Fun stat of the day: Not including tonight's game, Demarco Murray is currently ranked #5 in rushing in the NFL. The leading rusher is a QB and two of four ahead of Murray were on losing teams.

Our offense should be better. With the personnel we have, we shouldn't look that sloppy. Garrett is no longer the play caller, but it is still his system. So, does his system just suck no matter who calls it? I dont know, I Just want it fixed ASAP.

Concerns?

You bet.

But I never felt that the Cowboys were the inferior team.

The reality is teams are going to double Dez all year. You have Witten, you drafted Escobar and Williams, and you're paying Miles Austin big money. Those guys (Austin in particular) should be having field days if the coverage is constantly rolled towards Bryant.

My biggest concern after game one was how conservative the offence was overall; is it too late to give Garrett play calling back??

My view on this game is this: The first game of the year is like the real preseason. Nothing held back on offense or defense. Everybody in the league shows who they are and what they intend to do for the season. Also, the first game is different in that teams have a lot of time to get ready for this game. As I understand it, Romo said the Giants played a scheme they hadn't seen before. And, as has been pointed out already, it is a scheme they will likely see again. But, having seen it, there will be adjustments. The Giants play Denver next week. Think the Broncos have not already dissected what the Giants were doing? This is a copycat league, and a rapid adjustment league. I believe this is why some teams start fast and then fade quickly into nothing. Some teams adjust well and some are not so good at it. We didn't see the real Cowboys last year until the second game and it was a major disappointment. Let's hope this week they understand that they need to adjust according to what happened against the Giants, and what KC did and will probably do next Sunday. This is a challenge for the coaches. We will soon know who this team is.

I would be more concerned about the pass defense than I would anything else... Yes, more than the running game.

The NFL has evolved into a pure speed league. Gone are the days of monster Linebackers and Defensive lineman and bone crushing Safeties.

You need quick, shifty RB's and WR's. and a fast defense to fly to the ball.

So what does Jerry do? Drafts a bruising RB.
