this is what I think with 9 days to go:

1) I doubt we'll trade up as some have rumored...I think we stay at 18 or trade down...my guesses if we stay at 18 are:
1A OT Winston Justice 1B OLB Kamerion Wimbley 1C OLB Manny Lawson...I think if Justice is there he will be the pick and start at RT by the time the season opener gets here...huge upgrade for a struggling OL...I like Wimbley a little more than Lawson because he is a little more physical...I'd be happy with either though and both should be good complments for Ware

2) if Vandy QB Jay Cutler starts to slip and makes it past Arizona, it might get interesting...I still doubt they'd move up, but I like Cutler and would think about it alot if he falls far enough for us to get into range...he has alot of talent and produced good numbers in a great football conference, despite playing on a poor team with almost no talent around him...he has some flaws (footwork, forcing balls) but those can be corrected and he wouldnt be expected to start now anyway

3) if we dont stay at 18 and move down I could see a player like OLB Bobby Carpenter, DB Antonio Cromartie or OT Eric Winston being the pick somewhere in the mid to late 20's

4) I wouldnt be shocked if WR Santonio Holmes ends up as a Cowboy, I know it wouldnt be a popular pick with some, but I could see the logic behind it and think he'd add alot to our team as an explosive 3rd WR and excellent return guy

5) I have no idea why, but I wont be surprised if Greg Ellis is traded on draft day or maybe the night before, maybe for a 2nd rd pick to a team that needs a quality DE (somebody like KC)...they (Cowboys) seem to be looking at a number of guys who are 3-4 DE prospects (guys like R Wright, Cofield etc etc) and considering that we already have Spears, Canty, Ratliff & Coleman (in addition to Ellis) it just seems like something might be up...I dont want to see Ellis traded, but I could see it happening (yes, even though they paid him the bonus)

6) if we take a QB on day one, I bet Romo is traded...maybe for a 4th or 5th rd pick

7) it isnt a major need, but would love Notre Dame TE Anthony Fasano in the 3rd rd...also like Northwestern DL Cofield in rd 3

8) things I dont want to see...no trade up in the 1st rd for a QB unless its a few spots for Cutler, no trading up for Ngata...no drafting of a RB on day one, no interior OL's picked in rd one or early rd two (if an early rd two pick were acquired), no players that are solely ILB's picked on day one, want nothing to do with Chad Greenway in round one, other than Holmes there isnt one WR I would want to draft on day one...injury concerns would make me scratch Tenn DB Allen and Auburn OT McNeil completely...I'd also scratch any "running" QB, not worth the time...

I like to read alot of the threads on ES, and those boys have a love affair for Cromartie, I would laugh, and laugh, and laugh if we picked him up right before them.

Of course if we did, everyone on ES would be saying he sucked anyway and they didn't want him and he is overrated.

Those boys are nuts over there.

The Dallas Cowboys have six draft picks in the 2006 NFL Draft. The team has picks 1.18 (18 overall), 2.17 (49 overall), 3.16 (80 overall), 5.18 (150 overall), 6.13 (182 overall) and 7.16 (224 overall).

Good thoughts dbair. The FA moves this year and the depth available at the LB position mean a move down is likely if the Cowboys can find the right partner on draft day. More picks to gather depth while staying cagey on who they actually like seems like the strategy this year. We'll see.

Very well thought out. Nice.

The only change I would have to say I would make, is that if Abdul Hodge, ILB somehow drops to the 3rd, then take a ILB first day. I don't think he will drop though.

I don't see us taking an offensive lineman with our 1st round pick.

I agree with your takes dbair. Not sure about the order for your first round picks (1a,b,c) but for the most part agree with the majority of your takes.

I agree with this. But I have the gut feeling all three will be gone.

It's one thing to "groom" a 3rd rounder or later. But in today's league if you draft a QB in the first round he better be in your plans to play right away or no more than a year. That's what happened to Bledsoe in Buffalo- everyone knew Bledsoe was better than Losman but they had this big investment and felt they had to go with it. No 1st round QB's this year.

3) if we dont stay at 18 and move down I could see a player like OLB Bobby Carpenter, DB Antonio Cromartie or OT Eric Winston being the pick somewhere in the mid to late 20's
I agree- if the three you listed earlier are all gone I think we'll look to move down.

4) I wouldnt be shocked if WR Santonio Holmes ends up as a Cowboy, I know it wouldnt be a popular pick with some, but I could see the logic behind it and think he'd add alot to our team as an explosive 3rd WR and excellent return guy

Bill gave in on TO- doubt he goes against his philosophy and drafts a 1st round WR.

I doubt Ellis is traded. He's still a productive player at a reasonable salary. We don't need the cap space. If someone offered us a 2nd sure but noone's going to. The only way this happens is if Ellis quietly demands a trade.

6) if we take a QB on day one, I bet Romo is traded...maybe for a 4th or 5th rd pick
In the end I don't think we draft a QB this year. The rumors about QB's IMO had more to do with concerns about Henson than Romo. But since Henson has shown improvement I think he stays. Romo is a lot more valuable to us than anyone else- he knows our system. But his lack of experience and pedigree makes him worth maybe a 6th.

7) it isnt a major need, but would love Notre Dame TE Anthony Fasano in the 3rd rd...also like Northwestern DL Cofield in rd 3
1st day TE is a luxury pick for us. Can't see that happening when we don't have a 4th and so many real needs. I want a guy chosen on the 1st day to have a chance to start by year 2. Fasono would never start ahead of Witten and the addition of Hannam means TE is a 2nd day issue if that. 1st three rounds- OLB-OL-DB-DT or WR.

David

I generally agree about not trading up, although Ngata could be an impact player for us. In the 3-4 if your NT loses the battles you lose the game most of the time. In a draft weak on NT's Ngata is the best prospect. i'd rather move up for him than Cutler. I'm happy with our RB's. I agree with no 1st day ILB's and no Greenway. Agree on Allen. I'd take McNeil in the 2nd with no problem. No QB's running or otherwise.

:laugh1: You've been consistent on that point.

I don't see why the Cowboys wouldn't select Justice if he's there. Justice is arguably as athletic as Ferguson and would push for a starting job right away.

Personally I think we have more of a problem at guard at this point. Peterman is unproven.

I would rather see us take a OLB in the first round and the kid from Pitt-- Spencer in round 2.

I would also prefer a LB (Wimbley) in the 1st with Spencer in the 2nd and a FS or tackle in the 3rd.

i agree with david's thoughts on all counts. good post. my preference is OL or OLB in 1 and the other in 2.

mike, i would not cry if we went justice in round 1 and spencer or best OG in 2. even though this may not be sexy, it will pay long term dividends.

There is some merit to that.

What keeps me off is that neither then 1st or 2nd round pick would then be a starter... and I have a problem with that.

There is no doubt in my mind that unless Fabini drops over dead he will start... that's just they way Purcells does things.

And I'm not tossing Petitti under the bus yet. Let's see what a good offseason does for the kid.
