I wish we had managment and coaches that would do the following, am I out of line?
Post the following team expectations
Build the team around Witten, Ware, Barber, Z Thomas, Keith Davis & Romo, start cutting bait with everyone else who doesn't work as hard and hates to lose like these guys.
If you cant cut them because of salary cap implications, don't let them be rewarded by being released, instead bench their *** until they start working hard in practice, voluntarily work overtime without being asked and camp out in the film room on their own initiative. If they begin to do the above, then consider moving them up to 3rd string on a trial basis. If they quit talking smack, celebrating in the 1st quarter after a routine play, then consider letting them play more. Don’t make decisions on who has the most physical talent but who has the best work ethic, heart, attention to detail, toughness & emotion.
The average career of an NFL player is very short, get players who recognize this and will devote all their time to winning. They can rest and play in the off season and when their careers are over. Ask players if they would prefer to celebrate a few great plays and wins that no one will remember but never miss a meaningless party or sacrifice 6 months a year in order to win a Super Bowl that no one can ever take away that will give them joyous memories for life (not to mention endless income opportunities).
Bring back the fear of losing their job to all players, constantly churn the roster and keep everyone on their toes.
No yelling, screaming or cussing is required with the above plan. Just be the silent assassin and cut/bench where applicable. They'll figure out what they need to do, be gone or riding the pine.
Imagine a practice when the first team offensive line comes out to get some work. As they start to take the field, coach puts out his hands and says: "not you Gurode and Flo, we're going with Proctor and Free and if they don't work out, we'll go find someone else until you guys earn your jobs back," As they stare in disbelief at their coach with their mouths hanging open, he just turns and yells, "who's next?” No warning, nothing...silent assassin strikes again.
Lastly, risk releasing players a year early rather than a year late. You avoid crippling your team with underperforming high paying contracts and you get to keep churning your roster in the process.
Don't sweat the wins and losses; eventually you'll build a TEAM that will reap what they sow
Post the following team expectations
- We love the game of football
- We are here to win Super Bowls, while we may take pride in smaller accomplishments, this will always be our ultimate goal.
- We hate losing more than we love winning
- We are a team, will play as a team and no part will ever be greater than the whole.
- We practice & study with 100% attention to detail and intensity because we know we will ultimately play like we practice
- Failure is not an option
- Penalties are not acceptable
- Time required by management for practice, study and fitness training is not enough for a player who wants to be great and see his team be the best it can be. Therefore, time will be spent on the players own initiative to understand his assignment, rules of the game and intricacies of the game & his position cold. If you are on this team, we have determined that you are this type of player.
- We do not waste time & energy to celebrate in the middle of the battle but only when the battle is won.
- Despite the goals stated above, we understand that perfection is not an option, but we also understand that if we don’t aim for the stars we’ll never hit the moon.
