My focused area of interest - DT

You'd be better served waiting for either June 1 cuts or TC camp cut downs.

Detroit doesn't need Mingo or as you term him a useless TE.
Long story short the team would be best served if we make getting a proven run stopper a priority.

As in job one

We shouldn't look past these big guys just because they were day #3 picks.

Two of the best NT type D-linemen, both on championship teams, were undrafted free agents.

I'm talking about Jim Burt of the 80's Giants under Parcells and Tony Siragusa of the Ravens under Billick.

I thought the Cowboys greatest need for improvement was at RB and DT and they waited until day #3 to address both. However, they did double down on both positions at that time and I want to believe they waited on DT because they targeted at least one of them for a reason.

One such candidate is Justin Rogers, a second-year candidate trying to make his way onto the 53-man roster in 2025. Rogers was a double-SEC guy, attending both Kentucky and Auburn. After being drafted in the seventh round, the Cowboys cut him loose at the end of training camp and he was picked up by Cincinnati as they formed their 2025 practice squad. At the end of last season, the Cowboys poached him from there, adding him to their active roster, ...... but he never appeared in a game.

" but he never appeared in a game> "

That should tell it all when it comes to a dart toss in the dark.

if Rogers surprises this summer, great ..! .. but it's best to have low expectations than get overreaction that these 7th round & undrafted types can immediately have a major impact.

i still think our best best is a Jon Hankins like, late round trade with another NFL team.
Either at some point this summer before the reg. season, ..or during the season,

Otherwise expect the usual scraps & scrubs and has-been's off the street..

You never once checked on the man and his development in himself and the team.

Quick, check the number of times he wears underware beneath his kiln. While at it, check on the Loch Ness Monster.

Ellison came up in the same way and same round. Only an All Pro in Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys didn't stick to the proverbial script when it came to their 2025 draft class. The team had clear needs entering the weekend, but instead of trying to find the best available player at those key positions, Dallas simply took the best available player, needs be ignored. The team didn't take a wide receiver at all, waited until the fifth round to select a running back and the seventh round to select a nose tackle.

That NT was UCLA's Jay Toia, an interesting pick to say the least. The Cowboys desperately need a man in the middle to line up next to their newly re-signed star three-technique Osa Odighizuwa; someone capable of commanding a double team and still producing. The question is whether or not Toia will be that guy, at all, much less in his rookie season. Dallas didn't throw any darts at the wall in free agency, and continued their trend of not throwing resources out the spot over the last decade outside of 2023 first-round pick Mazi Smith. Toia will have a great chance to earn snaps as a rookie.

I dunna know. I was sold on him only you to find he didn't play for Michigan.
Toia is the annual flyer on a Day 3 nose tackle the Cowboys have become accustomed to. The hope, every year, is that they discover the next Jay Ratliff. Can Toia be that guy? He certainly has some enticing traits as he does have atypical movement for someone over 340 pounds. For evidence of whether or not he's doing his job well, look at how impressive the Bruins' linebacker corps looks. They were often clean, and Toia seems to be a heavy contributing factor there.

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 346 pounds

Hometown: Detroit, MI

High School: Oak Park (Oak Park, MI)

College: Auburn University (Highlight Video)

Draft: 2024, Seventh-round pick No. 244

Acquired: 2024 NFL Draft

Contract: Three-year deal (2024), $2.8 million

Rogers is part of a collection of bottom-roster candidates trying to make an impression on new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and line coach Aaron Whitecotton. Once training camp rolls around, Rogers will look to compete with 2024 UDFA Denzel Daxon, and 2025 draft picks Jay Toia (sixth round) and Tommy AKingbesote (seventh round) for a spot in Dallas' interior rotation.

This is the group that this fan is going to watch grow. It is a group of 7th round developing tackles. They are the trash can full of dirt brigade. I'm watching. This group are tasked with planting themselves and resist all effort to move them.

They are men and are tasked to become immovable. Get strong as hell as well as mean to match.

They will fail out the gate and have set backs, but they will grow. They are Cowboys and do have pride to impress.

None these three are All Pro, but nothing says that they can't become one. I'm going to pay attention and notice directions and their own struggles to maximize stubborn and contribute.

I'm watching and rooting for this very group.

They will add to the Veterans:

Odighizuwa started 12 of 16 games as a rookie, and has started all 17 games in each of the last three seasons. He has 13.5 career sacks, including 4.5 in 2024 when he has 60 pressures, third-most of all defensive linemen. He'll be spelled this season by Solomon Thomas, a 2025 free-agent acquisition, and most likely flanked by Mazi Smith, their 2023 first-round pick out of Michigan.
Love the player. Glad we got him back on the team. He's a big ole Dump truck full of dirt with some athletic ability too. If we can just get him on the field to take snaps on early run downs, it helps a lot. He'd be great in goal line Talking about Rogers.

Time on the carpet is most important right now.

Keeping Osa was good in that it kept our 3 tech for 2-3 years that provides a lot of pressures up the middle. However, we still needed a proper rotating DT to go along with him.
There was a glutton of DT's in this draft, some with supposed high ceilings potential this draft. The front office decided other players were worthier in rounds 1-3.

The team is relying on Mazi to make a jump, Rogers to make a jump(from year long PS player on the Bengals) and then a few day 3 DT's possibly.
It seems risky to use capital to get a Pickens, burn another year of Dak-CDL-Parsons etc and risk having the defense once again be the let down if the middle is a sieve similar to the Nick Hayden era.

While a round 1 rookie would of not guaranteed success, just felt like once they re-signed Osa they put the DT position(s) on the back burner.

Why we continue to take risk at dt is beyond stunning. But I think we wanna see if we found a gem first, before adding another body there.

Right now, Solomon Thomas is backup for Osa...

DT will still suck next season and i still dont see them stopping the run. You cant always throw only 7th Round Picks at DT and hope one pans out. The success rate % and history say otherwise. Hopefully that will be Mazis last year of showing something. What a waste of a pick that has been.

If im Jerry i try to get DJ Reader from the Lions who might be on the trade block

Wait until lunch before breaking down in tears...start with a lunch and not a moonshine martini with salt rims.
