So I have to eat crow, give credit or whatever for JG. Over the last 8 years I found him horrible as a HC/ OC and I don't think it was unwarranted for a majority of it. He spent years learning on the job and making mistakes. We all saw it and Jerry acknowledged it. I thought and still believed, until recently, that 2014 was an aberration and he had a perfect team to get one good year. You can say that again this year but he has learned. I give Lineham and the coordinators a lot of credit but they were JG hires to get a system in. I always was a Romo guy and thought JG blew it but I hope this turns a corner. The video post game shows some good stuff and I LOVE this team. JG has a group snd hope he can move forward to keep it up.

Sorry if there has been a lengthy one already on this. New job and family has kept me away a lot 'tis year!

I got to give credit to both Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett. I wanted Garrett gone and so did many people. Jerry Jones stuck with him. Garrett got the right staff on board and now we're looking like a very tough team. Props to them both.

True and I'm not sure if Stephen had caused some of it but everyone as a whole is on same page

Garrett also had the skill-set to be a good coach what infuriated people was the OJT,I get it.

Garrett has always been a good coach. Jerry threw him under the bus about coaching decisions but ever coach makes mistakes in hindsight. Jerry was wrong for saying those things.

Garrett has preached the RKG and tried to get those type of players, Jerry has always tried to throw a monkey wrench in with the decisions he has made (TO, Hardy, Gregory, McClain, Rob Ryan) . The frustration on Garrett's face when they drafted Gregory said it all.

The first thing Garrett did was start rebuilding the team and he started with the offensive line. For basically 3 years Romo had to play behind a college offensive line, but now it is the strength of the team and Garrett knew Zeke would take this team to another level and was ecstatic with the pick. He has finally got his coordinators and coaches on board. He has started working on defense and has already showed much improvement this year.

The most impressive thing about Garrett is his team always shows up to play. Parcells alway had to worry about the team eating the cheese, but Garrett has never had that problem. We simply don't have trap games anymore because Garrett's teams shows up to play every Sunday.

Another thing we have is continuity because at least someone was able to convince Jerry to not change coaches every 2-3 years.

Yeah it is a process and it moves day by day. Today we are 8 - 1 and next Monday we will be 9-1.

Garrett is a much better coach than Jerry is a GM, but Jerry is one of the best owners in the NFL

They've coached much differently this year.

JG has been agrressive and lost the highly conservative mindset he started with. The offensive staff has also changed their play calling to fit the personnel better. Last year was terrible.

It's taken awhile but they are doing a good job this year.

I know I started this thread and it's a nod to JG but I disagree with 2 things here. First I disagree with the notion that Jerry threw him under the bus early. JG was making horrible decisions with time management, game planning and just basic coaching. It was consistently bad the first few years and cost us games that may have equaled playoffs. Secondly I disagree that the team was always prepared and came out ready. If you said they always had JGs back and never quit I'd agree but a hallmark of the earlier years...and even up until last year...was coming out flat and falling behind early only to have Romo lead a furious comeback in the second half. Then that ended with injuries.

With that said, and going back to my OP, he has grown into the role and is much more comfortable actually coaching. He is trusting what he built whereas I felt he wrestled with his role and game plan before. My one reservation is that, like 2014, he does well with the perfect pieces in place but I think he showed that might not be the case with surviving injuries this year. I also, as someone said above, want to see this roll into many years. But I had to finally give the guy credit after ragging him for years. He looks like he grew into the roll and that he's pressing the right buttons.

Agreed, I have been pretty vocal here and with my friends on my disdain for Ginger as HC and especially OC when he started. Last year was still a travesty, but I have to give the whole staff props now. The coaching has evolved, so will my opinion of JG. Keep up the good work guys!

There are very very few members in here that can believe we are the #1 team in the NFL today and we are coached by Jason Garrett. Last year most thought he was in the lowest tear of HC's in the league and wanted him gone.

The media and this board share a hive mentality. There is always a whipping boy, parirah, witch hunt, or whatever you want to call it. The media had been speculating (rightfully so in some instances) JG being on the "hot seat" for several years now. JG has his pros and cons like any other HC.

Just look at the panthers, made the super bowl and were seen before the season as the favorites along with Seattle for the NFC and they (panthers) are terrible. All those people (including media) would drone on about how great Ron Rivera is and how he turned the franchise around are not saying that this season.

I am in the same boat. He has been excellent this year, and so has the entire staff. JG was not a good coach in the past, and frankly it took him much longer to learn OTJ than you would have thought, especially given his intelligence. I still am not happy we spent 4-5 years losing 2-4 winnable games per year because he wasn't yet ready to be a head coach.

His strength seems to be his management of people. He knows what type of player and assistant coach he wants and understands how to assist in the development of the player. He's more of a 'director' than an 'instructor' type.

I've said this for a while about Garrett, even when my dislike for him reached all time highs....he does a good job of developing players. And people disagreed with me and said he didn't deserve any credit for developing defensive players because he's not a defensive coach. But, that's hogwash. The HC is responsible for managing the practice and dictating the overall environment for where the player can develop. That's what separates Garrett from Wade, who is a far more brilliant mind schematically.

The issue for Garrett has been control, particularly with the playcalling. I think his weakness was playcalling and it hurt the development of Romo over the years and perhaps didn't allow for him to play to his strength (management) and that may have hurt the overall development of the offense.

Here's the thing about this offense...as good as it is, almost every contributor on the team is either been drafted or signed as a UDFA by the Cowboys:

Romo (UDFA)
Prescott (4th round)
Elliott (1st round)
Dunbar (UDFA)
T-Will (3rd round)
Dez (1st round)
Beasley (UDFA)
Whitehead (UDFA)
Witten (3rd round)
Swaim (6th round)
Hanna (6th round)
Free (4th round)
Martin (1st round)
Fred (1st round)
Leary (UDFA)
L. Collins (UDFA)
T. Smith (1st round)

You usually never see that many players on an offense (or defense) being all 'home grown.' Especially a great offense. The only contributors on offense that are not home grown are Morris (backup) and Butler (backup).

Now we'll have to see if he can avoid burning out EE and continue to progress Dak and get the right pieces in place on defense.

Some of y'all never have him a chance.
Have your preconceived notions.
Even the media isn't giving him any credit to this day. But the Eagles head coach....to name one...is getting full credit for Wentz's success.

Doesn't matter...I'm a football person. I know the real deal.

Only in Cowboy Land can we have the ball on 1st and 10 with 44 seconds left in the half on our own 18 yard line and it's the oposing team who almost ended up scoring. This team is winning in spite of it's HC.

First it seems like you are just trying the derail the thread and my thoughts. Secondly I gave him plenty of chances. He's a good guy but if you thought he was doing well his first 3-4 years then you are dead wrong. He wasted many shots for Romo by blowing 2-3 games a season. Even in 2014 he made some questionable calls in the playoffs with time management. I'm giving him full credit now because some people don't learn and he seems to have turned a corner. Overall though he was a very bad Coach in Training for a few years.
