Cowboys are finally in a friendly cap position now with Dez and Romo's contracts off the books.
I will use the Cowboys ideaolgy of targeting positions of need and then filling them with at least two players whether it be through draft and/or FA.
I'll start with in house moves:
Cut Hurns and Twill
Cooper has a $14M cap hit next year, resign the 24 year old to a long term contract lowering his cap hit.
Resign LP to his usual $1.1M
Resign Lawrence to his $19M AAV
Resign Tavon for less than $2.5M as our speed WR and return compeition
Luckily a lot of our holes line up well with strengths of FA and draft. Also there are certain positions that are devalued in free agency.
Strengths of draft: DT, TE, T, and size/speed WRs
Strength of free agency: edge rusher
Position devalued in FA: RB, safety, run stopping DT
Positions of need for the team:
Complement back to Zeke with receiving chops
Complete TE1
Both starting DT positions
Starting quality edge rusher
Developmental swing tackle
Big body slot WR
Beasley replacement
Starting Box safety and backup FS
CB5
FA signings:
Danny Shelton will not be returning to the Pat's and given how little the Pat's had to give in order to acquire Shelton I don't think there will be a huge market. The Browns run defense ranked this year after Shelton was dealt. Give him some Rod magic and we'll be cooking. Still young.
For edge rusher I'd target the high profile that shows the weakest market in free agency. There are so many that intrigue me:
Graham, Barrett, Irvin, Fowler, Ford, Ansah, Morgan, Clark, Preston Smith, Clowney, Ray, and Flowers.
Of these some are highly unlikely.
Most two favorites that are actually feasible are Ansah and Preston Smith. I'll assume Ansah still is able to get a big deal with a desperate team and I'll take Smith.
Ahhhh the safety position
Morgan Burnett has asked for his release from the Steelers as he's been miscast as a dime LB when he's quite obviously a box safety. I like Adrian Amos more than Earl and Landon Collins. If he can be had for the $3Mish less than the other two guys mentioned I'd jump all over it. Finding starters at a somewhat important position for less than $4M is incredible and it happened over and over again last offseason at the safety position.
For the draft I just have some favorites I want that I'm not sure where they will go as of right now:
Size and speed big body slot I'm going 6'5 Antione Wesley out of Texas Tech.
For TE1 I'm going Jace Sternberger out of A&M of which many people are familiar. TE is a position that takes the longest to transition to the NFL. I might splurge on Demetrius Harris too in free agency to really make TE a strength of this team.
Complementary RB- Devine Ozigbo out of Nebraska could take some of the load and wouldn't lead the defense to know if we are running or passing.
I will look further into draft prospects, but in a perfect world I would spend another pick on TE, another WR, two DTs and a swing tackle.
