My one and only complaint about Garrett

Yes, against the skins late in the year. That was after they had clinched the division and he was, according to some, attempting to get the skins pissed off so they wouldn't lay down in the game (he apparently wanted the team to have to fight a little going into playoffs). Really, that's the only "trick play" (if you want to call it that) that I recall from last year. JG isn't a big risk taker, and I'm fine with that. I think his philosophy falls along the lines of being able to outperform the other team from good execution of your normal game plan rather than resorting to trickery. I'm good with that.

I'm 100% behind Jason Garrett being the Cowboys head coach. He's brought a "Pound the rock" philosophy to the team that is starting to pay dividends. He's learned from his first year and has gotten better and better. Lets his coaches coach and relinquished the play calling duties. He runs a physical build from the trenches attitude all of which is how you win football games. My only wish is that he not be so conservative. It was successful against the Commanders last year and lead to the route on Dec. 28th. He needs to do a bit more of that, onside kicks, fake punts going for it more on 4th down. Jimmy Johnson used that with great success during his tenure. It was a difference maker in several games. The fact that he showed a little last year gives me hope that he's getting comfortable enough that we might start seeing a little more of that. It fits perfectly with being a physical, stop us if you can type of team.

I agree with this in general, but with one exception. If.....and it's still an if.....this defense shows itself to be a smothering unit that can create a consistently great pass rush, then I think punting at midfield in short-yardage situations is the smart thing to do. A lot of offenses make dumb mistakes backed up by their goal line against a pressure defense.

But in recent years, it's driven me crazy at times, too. In plus territory, the odds were better of Romo converting a fourth down than punting and trying to hold on defense.

Onside kicks are too risky, but I like those skyrocket kickoffs that land around the 15 yard line. Fake punts are easy to stop if the defense recognizes it, so gotta be careful with the timing there.

Dez can rip a ball 70 yards with a tighter spiral than any quarterback in the league. Have you seen him? He throws a beautiful ball. I have no idea why they've never put something in to take advantage of that.

Yea me too. I actually said it lightheartedly. Do you remember the botched reverse play Landry called on that opening drive of the Super Bowl, 1978. Dorsett had been KILLING the Steelers on that drive, and Landry went gadget. Killed the drive.

Now, that is basic coaching and most coaches will do this. I stated that wasn't the case with JG. He had his set offense early on. His first year was great with being pass happy (with the help of sparano). Defenses figured him out and his play calling stuttered. His tendency was to stay the same not because he didn't have the personnel but because he believed that he could just use the "plug in and play" method. He wouldn't change. Then in his interviews, he blamed it on execution. When, in fact the problem was he would not adapt his offense to fit the strengths of his players. If he had done that, TO would have been used like he was when Sparano was helping. We'd have used more rollouts with Tony and other designed plays to get Tony outside the pocket because it hid our bad oline. Those wonderful plays that Tony completed where busted plays that Tony improvised on his own. JG never played to his strengths. He rolled the dice and hope he'd get lucky instead actually playing to our strengths. Even when our running game was working, he had a tendency to panic and start passing.

He's a far better leader than a playcaller. Things should stay as they are currently.

Not a huge supporter of Garrett, but I have to defend him on being conservative a bit. I think the defense he has had the last few years has left a lot to be desired. A better defense will allow the offense to be more aggressive.

In regards to gadget plays I believe Garrett is of the belief that if you need gadget plays to win then you aren't going to go very far in this league and I'm of that belief as well.

Im a balanced guy. And I certainly love a strong run game. Dont forget that we were pass happy for how many years under Garrett and where did that get us? Passing too much can be a problem for this team and Romo. More risky. Why pass, if you can run? Play action bombs? Love it.
