In my initial review I was primary focused on the blocking and didn't ready consider the down/distance. The handy yellow line does not show up in the All-22 view.
I went back and focused specifically on the RBs.
McFadden
McFadden was better than I originally thought. He was actually very good.
Of 7 touches he had 3 first downs, a 19 yard reception, an 8 yard run, and 1 run with no chance.
I also saw 2 quality pass blocks by McFadden.
2nd Quarter
10:53 8 yards
10:07 1st down
8:34 1st down
7.54 catch 19 yards, 1st down
7:17 3 yards
4:53 1 yard
3rd Quarter
9:05 -2 yards, no chance, not his fault
At 7:17 I think he ran it as coached and got what was available; however, I think he could have taken it to the sideline and had a bigger gain. The coaches in this scheme really prefer that the RB stay fairly tight to the OT on outside runs and seem to discourage taking it far to the outside. I think they might want to reconsider that when McFadden is the RB because he can turn the corner on the plays that Murray couldn't because of his speed. I wouldn't want to see Randle do it, but I think it's a good option with McFadden.
At 4:53 he had the one play that I really had a problem with. I don't know if he could have gotten much more out of it, but he can't be indecisive in this scheme. He needs to either cut it up inside or kick in the jets and take it far outside. Witten lost his block which killed the design of this play, but McFadden still should have been more decisive, IMO. I find it odd that Beasley was out in front blocking on this play. This happened several times in the game with either Beasley or Lucky on the front side of a running play.
The play at 9:05 had no chance. The slot CB either anticipated the play or was blitzing. I originally blamed Lucky for not blocking him, but the CB had already jump towards the line and away from Lucky before the snap and making it impossible to block him.
I'll add a post for Randle's review later.
