I'm going to start these thought's with a player most people probably aren't thinking about rigt now and thats, CedricThornton. In a recent mailbag on DC.com the brought up a comment he made last yr that says alot about this coaching staff. He said "they expect you to come in, in shape". In said mailbag Broaddus says that seemed to be his hold back in 2016. But says he was working out at Frisco way before OTA's and its showing in practices. Says he's already in there with the starters with noticeable difference from 2016. Thornton was always a problem for this OL because he's so strong while he was with the eagles. Looking forward to seeing him with the pads on at TC.

Nolan Carroll and the CB situation. I think Dallas values veteran experience, as we saw even last yr Collins, Irving, and Mayowa didnt really get significant amounts of snaps until Crawford and Lawrence bodies broke down. So i think one of these CBs are going to be have to be significantly better to replace him in the lineup.

Broaddus and others at VR seem to be talking more and more about Awuzie switching positions at some point. He was a low RD2 guy so he's not really a guy who is a lock for any one set position. He's agressive and he's a tackler but he just doesnt seem as fluid as they might like at CB. KInda like what Byron Jones showed when they played him at CB. Couldn't really handle the quickness some WR's showed. Awuzie and Jones do look to have the same type of skillset. So Awuzie going in and playing centerfield when Jones drops down to cover TE's would be smart.

Collins im going to call it now will be starting at RT in 2016, and its going to be Cooper starting at RG with Green playing the swing T. And im not complaining one bit because this team will continue to have depth with Green, Looney, Cleary, Bell and Skipper incase of injuries. This team has made life really easy for Dak and Elliot.

I think Butler might be in trouble. With Switzer already becoming a favorite of Dak and the coaching staff, he's going to take snaps away from Butler. But the danger doesnt really come from Switzer because i dont think he could go into a game and be a outside guy on every play incase of a a injury to Dez or TW. The danger comes from Andy Jones an Noah Brown as they been catching coaches eyes during OTAs and minicamp. They been improving and doing the little things. If they can make noise during TC and show it in preseason i have no doubt Butler would get cut.

Collins is getting alot of attention from DC.com lately, but they need to hold on. This team isnt going to kick Crawford aside unless his body just cant go. And if he's healthy they shouldn't. When Crawford is healthy the guy is a beast. Always in the backfield. He did really good last for a guy basically playing with 1 arm. Collins is the future 3tech but at present it's Crawford's job to lose IMO. I dont like that philosophy as im loving how these young guys are playing. But thats reality with this team. If Crawford can go he's the starter with Collins coming in on the 3rd series.

One player i dont think will ever come back is Demarcus Lawrence. His back is taking a Romo-like turn. But its good Dallas didnt neglect the spot, as they have Mayowa, Tapper, and Moore who can man the spot. I didnt mention Charlton because i dont think Irving will win his appeal and he will be gone atleast until week 6. He's suspended 4 games but he will most likely need 2 more weeks to get back in game shape.

Word is Hitchens is showing some really good play, granted without pads. But he has a lion looking over his shoulder named Jaylon. If Jaylon shows enough in TC and preseason Hitchens might be headed to ST ace. I dont think Jaylon will start the yr as the starting MIKE, but at some point this yr i think he will replace Hitchens. And it will be Jaylon and not Hitchens in on nickle downs.

This LCB will end up being either Brown or Lewis. Scandrick will be the slot as most teams run the majority of the game with 3 WR's anyways. MY preference is Lewis as i think he has the best ball skills and cover skills then any of the CBs on this team. He get's a little handsy but IMO he played to the rules of College. But its not like he didnt show the ability to just be a magnet on a WR and shut him down. These Depth problems at WR CB and S are a great thing for this team to have.

Im one who think s this team still needs to bring in a QB. Not comfortable with only Moore as the backup. I dont think any of the undrafted guys will be on this team long.

There are some questions on this team, but not any really glaring needs. People will point to DE and pressure. But like i have been saying since last yr. Dallas finished the yr as one of the better sack and pressure front 7 in the last 6 weeks of the yr when they were forced to get their young guys in there playing significant snaps. They will be without a big one in Irving to start the yr IMO. But they added guys who should be able to fill the void. IMO the real question is the inside. Dallas needs Crawford to get healthy, Collins to keep improving and Thornton and Paea to fill the middle and get some pressure aswell.

I like this teams chances this yr, anything else than a superbowl appearance for me this yr is a really big dissappointment. It's time, they have the depth and they have the core to dominate the NFC. Its time to take that next step and bring back them 92-93 feelings. Enjoy the ride.

I understand what you are saying about Butler. But I just can't see them going with 2 rookie WR's if they only keep 5. Seems Switzer is a lock to. make the team, and Jones and Brown viewing for that 6th WR spot, if they keep 6. That is my view before TC anyway.

Starting CB's for me, and as you said, they like those vet players in there too. Carroll and Brown at CB, Jones and for now, Heath at S. Not real comfortable with Heath, but will hold off on that until TC. All the rookie DB's will get playing time, but need to see how they do in TC.

I will also hold off any judgements on DLaw until TC and see how they handle him. If he is a go from day 1, then great. But if held out for precautionary reasons, yeah the end is coming, or very possibly. I seen a few people act as if he may even be cut. I doubt that. But agree, they have some options, and hopefully one of those in Irving will be available game 1. Depending on how much Mara gets his way.

He may have dropped to 60, but most "experts" gave him a late 1st to early/mid 2nd round grade at worst. The truth is that the Cowboys were lucky he lasted that long.

Yes because of the depth in the draft, there were a few players like this that were drafted by several teams. Depth for DB's that is.
I mean, Awuzie in the 2nd, Lewis in the 3rd, and he was ranked by some as a late 1st to mid 2nd. But dropped because of the DV case.
Then we got a S in the 6th that many had as high as a 2nd to 3rd round pick. Some as a 4th.

Good post LM
Agree with most of what you said except

1. Back up qb: I think they're comfortable with Moore. They won't waste another roster spot. If Dak died not go down, no need. If he goes down for 1 game Moore fills in. If he goes down for 3+ games I really believe Romo will come back. No back up QB gives this team a better shot than Romo.

2. Awuzie: he had the talent to start and I hope they don't mess with him like they did with Byron. Out him in 1 spot. I think he can play either CB or safety but don't rotate a rookie.

Always like and appreciate your thoughts LM.
For me MCollins is the best interior lineman on the squad and Crawford is going to have to
find more playing time at D1 [not likely]. Crawford got caught up in the injury cycle that's unfortunate.
Of course he'll be a good rotational player.

I have read Butler is looking sharp so far.his not giving up easily but I can't read him frankly.
We are having some positive depth issues finally the can that you want to have.
My 2016 pet cat has me clucking and shaking my head Rico straighten up and don't disappoint me.

Crawford's a good solider, and a valuable rotational piece for any defense. The problem is we foolishly paid him "war daddy" 3T money.

But, that is what it is for now. He seemed more natural at base LE last year, and he always gives you the option to kick inside on passing downs.

With Taco and (once he returns from suspension) Irving, we have a nice platoon of LE types that should really give us good production as an overall group there. The wildcards for how this line shakes out will be, as it always seems to be, the RE spot. Hopefully Lawrence rebounds and looks closer to what he was in 2015, because he looked like he'd emerge as a decent RE after that year. Then whatever you can get from Tapper/Mayowa/Moore is hopefully enough. Make no mistake though, we're banking on Lawrence. If he can't get the job done this year we'll move on and look to draft a twitched up RE early next year. Heck, we may choose to do so anyway even if he has a career year.

The line is not as far away as some think. We're a legit RE and another rotational 3T away from having a nice, deep group you can rely on. It's easily the best group we've had since making the switch to a 4-3 in 2013.

I agree with several of your points however I have a slightly different view on a couple. Specifically:

- I don't think a potential move of Awuzie to S has anything to do with a lack of ability in playing CB. Some of the reports I have read indicated confidence in his ability to play either CB position. I can easily see them giving them a look at Safety early in TC but that has more to do with understanding his capability for position flex and/or the estimated need at Safety vs. a lack of confidence in him capably playing CB. My opinion only.

- Carroll may start game 1 however I think they easily start rotating the rookies in as the year progresses (aka brown last year) if they see equal or greater ability with the rookie CBs

- A healthier Crawford is good for this team however I don't think he takes many plays from Collins. I remember the report of Collins being the 'one guy' that caused Martin (arguably the best guard in NFL) difficulties. We will see what happens when the pads are on however I see Collins leading the DLINE in # of plays played this year.

- I agree with you on Butler. For the last WR spot I think it comes down to Butler vs. Noah Brown. I am taking Brown to pull the upset to make the roster due to his youth, blocking abilities, and overall lack of confidence in Butler (although he seems to be doing much better in OTAs this year). I could easily be wrong on this and your point of 2 rookie WRs is legit.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Very good and appreciated.

I agree on wr. For one of these young guys to have a chance they need to show up on special teams. Butler has played well so far himself but special teams can really help a young guy have a shot

People forget how good Butler was when Dez was out, but they need to remember that. He'll be a year in the system, a year older, a year smarter, and I think he has the opportunity to be a game breaker if given the chance.

I love Butler, Clove, and can't wait to see our number five hooking up on those fades and toe drags in the endzone just like last year!

He and Dak are comfortable with each other :)

A very, very solid number 5 WR, who can step up in a pinch if (Heaven's forbid) Dez or TWill go down for a game or two.

The scheme used in Michigan from things I read are different than from what he will be used in here.
What years film were you watching.
They played a 3-4 D and he was not a 3-4 player. When they switched from a 3-4 to the 4-3, he was much more productive. As for seeming slow off the ball, again that was their style of D. A more read and react D. So he needs to learn to just react now.
Give him time, he will be fine. And don't expect too much too quick, as all rookies, well most, they need a year or 2.

You like him making the 53, Toruk?

Butler is a lock for the 53. He's capable of getting behind the defense on Go routes.

He also has a great rapport with Dak.

I think it's very possible we go 6 at WR. Especially since we aren't going to carry 2FBs like last year to start the season.

Just depends on if the young guys make them carry the extra and not risk losing them. Otherwise they'll try and get them to PS.

Solid post LM. I see about a dozen players on offence and defense that could have a break out year and get us over the first round playoff hump. We all know they all won't have breakout years so if even 4 of them contribute like I think they can, I think we have something special this year. Dak & Zeke are amazing and we have to have them performing at the highest level. Of course veterans like Dez & Wit at their best are huge contributors. Beas & Switz playing duel slots will be interesting to see... I think it could work. Of course no one has a better O-line than our linebeasts. The offense should be hitting on all cylinders, unstoppable.

The defense... this is where this team gets intriguing. I like what we've done in the draft and FA. I agree with letting the players walk that walked for bigger paychecks. We have smart talented young guys that are coachable and capable of being everything we want them to be. The rotation players on the D-line should be much improved. I suspect that pass rush we've been wanting has finally arrived. I'm excited to see how our DBs Hitch, Jaylon and Lee perform. As for CB and Safety... I'm curious to see how that pans out. Byron Jones and Anthony Brown are starters and so should OScan and Carroll but theses young guys we have will challenge them. Maybe I'm just too optimistic but I think we have us a shut down secondary.
