My thoughts on the draft

This draft IMO was all over the place for me. I think they absolutely killed it with the Zeke pick. IMO That pick alone put them back in the playoffs. Defense are going to be back to 2014 with this team. NO matter what they do the team is going to move the ball on them and is going to kill that clock with any kind of lead. That absolutely helps the defense because knowing the team can kill that clock put pressure on the opposing team to take chances down the field. And thats what marinelli's defense is designed to defend and get turnovers. Which they did in 2014.

Now their next action had me scratching my head. SEA wanted a RD1 pick. IMO they couldve given then Next yrs 1 combined with this yrs RD3 and maybe the OAK RD6 pick to get the QB you wanted. While still keeping that 34 pick. Its clear this team wanted Paxton Lynch. I think u could squeez a RD4 or RD5 pick out of SEA. That opens alot of new doors for Dallas but it didnt happen so ill move on, but if thats the player i wanted i make that deal happen.

Dallas went and drafted Jaylen Smith. The should know more about him then any other team but still even then its not known how much that injury will affect him going forward. With all that i still like the pick on the probability alone.

Maliek Collins, i like the player, but unless he really beats out Irving i dont think he sees much of the field. I dont think this team needed him but its good to have depth.

Charles Tapper, really like this pick because hes a sleeper in this draft. Oklahoma misused him so bad that they should pay the man for the millions he lost in the draft. I think he's going to suprise alot of people and i could see him the starter on the left side for the Cowboys.

Dak Prescott, after Zeke my favorite pick in this draft. I think alot of people hate this pick strictly because the team didnt get the QB that they wanted them to get. Prescott needs some work but nothing drastic. He has probably the best pocket stability in this entire draft. I dont see any QB in this draft that can handle a collapsing pocket and deliver a ball as accurately as him. This is the future, dont be suprised to see him being the backup instead of Moore.

Anthony Brown, to me he isnt going to make this team. Id rather the team go with hat they got especially with the progress Olotaye and Mitchell showed.

Kavon Frazier, a player who played in a system similar to what Dallas plays. Played the single high which he's not very good at, and then plays in the box the way Dallas plays Church and isnt affraid to lay a hit. Dont think he is anything more than a PS guy.

Darius Jackson, Think this is a guy for 2017 and not 2016. This yr i see no reason for this team not to go with Zeke, McFadden and Morris. And in 2017 subtract McFadden from there and add Jackson. Building future depth

Rico Gathers, Interesting pick I was thinking maybe this was a Jason peters type prospect but talk is this guy really had very good hands. Think this is another future pick could see him compete for 2017. Unless he blows everybody away i see him developing on the PS.

Thanks for write-up

As for the Denver trade....Seattle wanted a 1st round pick THIS year

Anyway, a 2017 1st rounder is not worth the same as a border line 1st rounder (pick 34) in 2016.
In other words, if Dallas offered a 2017 1st and a 2016 3rd, that is certainly not going to trump Denver's 2016 1st and 3rd.

Think they just wanted a RD1 pick i wouldve even thrown leary in there. SEA wanted OL

The Leary add might have worked

I really think the issue was that we offered our early 2nd and 4th and they wanted the early 2nd and 3rd

I disagree with Dak. I have watched him a lot at MSU. He is a guy that can be a good back up and spot play and win some games. But he is not the long term answer, unless he improves a tremendous amount. I also don't think the Cowboys see him as the long term answer, he was 5th on their list of QBs. He has some skills and some good pocket presence, but not an NFL quality starter material. I hope he can develop into more than I see but at this point, his ceiling to me is a back up. But that is ok with a 4th round pick.

The season would be forfeit if he is the backup and Tony goes down for an extended period. Neither he nor Moore can carry this team if Tony goes down.

I still think the Cowboys need to secure a legitimate backup QB before the season begins.

I believe they want to have Irving play some LDE this year, at least one of the Cowboy's writers on Twitter thought so. Sorry, cannot remember who.[/quote]

I actually don't think they will keep both McFadden and Morris. Think these two will battle it out. Can't see the loser of this battle wanting to hang around. And as far as Dunbar goes, I could see Jackson beating him out, given Dunbar's injury history and inability to stay on the field.

I actually think Prescott would be a better backup than Moore once he learns the playbook, due to his mobility. I could see Linehan designing some rollout, run, pass option plays for him. I do expect Dallas to bring in a vet QB to compete for a backup job with Moore though.

Good post, as usual, LM.

I especially agree on Prescott. He has Aikman-like leadership, poise, and football intelligence; those were question marks for Lynch.
And he's highly motivated, with something to prove.

Just having this kind of guy on the team improves everybody.

I agree Prescott can be a quality backup but I don't think he will be ready this season. Maybe next year.

Loved the draft all around besides Prescott. I'm ecstatic didn't trade up for Paxton. Waste of pics for a guy to sit.

Several of the draftniks that study these guys over a period of time say that Prescott improved more the last two years than any of the other top guys. Hopefully that means he still has room for growth. Some of the other guys are limited and may be close to their ceiling already, particularly a guy like Cook and even Goff.

I liked the draft.

zeke - great pick. i know folks debate on value, but this draft lacked "elite talent" as compared to some recent drafts. I think Zeke is elite in Dallas. I believe Stephen (and I'm not a fan of the Jones), but I think Baltimore was going to take him. So if we do the trade, we end up with Floyd. Would rather have Zeke than Floyd.

Smith - I'm a ND fan, so I'm biased, but we all can say "if" healthy he is elite. I also, don't think he lasts outside the 2nd and with these franchises being billion dollar companies, I'm sure Smith has been poked, proded and examined by more than just Dr. Cooper. No way any team is going to invest a 2nd round player that only has a 20% of ever playing again. I use 20% because on draft day, some posters were saying that's what they heard.

DL - both can rush. Rod loves Rushmen. They will both see quality playing time.

Dak - worth a shot. has proven he can win, has gotten better each year. just gotta hope with QB's.

DB's - like the potential. couple of folks had Brown as a 3rd rounder.

Jackson - could see him moving Dunbar off the roster

Rico - waste of a pick. would have rather went with Kenny Lawlyer. But can't have a draft without a TE.

Overall, I'm pleased and I think we have improved.

Marine sure loves him some Maliek Collins, for whatever that's worth.

Thanks for the write up.

I think either Morris or Mcadden may have to go, unless the Cowboys think we can stash one of the RBs on the practice squad. If one of the lower round RBS shows enough potential, I think we will cut Morris or McFadden. This could get interesting.

Zeke would get a majorite of the carries, and a guy like McFadden could be the backup, since he can do everything on a competent level. He is good insurance if Zeke goes out with a minor nick or for rest. Good 3rd down back as well. Could split carries with Zeke early until Zeke gets going, or hits the wall. Dunbar will probably be on pup early. Dallas could save some cap room here to by letting McFadden or Morris go.

Dunbar will act as cheap insurance early if on pup (no roster spot taken) so I doubt he is cut. Morris might be the best fit as a ZBS running back (if you strictly go by his ability to run the ball) but they say he is very one dimensional (can't catch) and isn't good at blitz pickup. Another reason that probably factored in to the Zeke pick.

If we can stash one of these young RBs on the practice squad early we might keep Morris and McFadden. Otherwise I think one of them doesn't make it out of camp, barring injuries to other RBs.

how is Morris as a blocker? Mac is good. I think JG is going to want at least two guys at RB who can really block.

Don't think it would have worked. Denver gave them a 1st and 3rd this year. We would have had to offer our second and third, since it was a better value, but the Seahawks might have still balked due to getting Denver's 1st. Ultimately, we might have had to sweeten the pot even more.

I think no matter what we would have had to give them the 34. Maybe the 34 and 67, but possibly the 34, 67 and a sixth or future pick.

I'll be surprised and disappointed if he isn't on the 53.

McFadden and Dunbar both are likely candidates to be elsewhere. McFadden makes the most and provides the cost cap savings and is not a great fit for the zone offense we want to run. Morris is a perfect fit. Dunbar is not likely to be ready to start the season and won't have a chance to fight for his job.

This draft will be forever judged by what J Smith does. If he has a good to great career of 8-10m yrs. I will say history will view it in a good light. With all the holes the team has on D and the fact Smith might not play anytime soon, we can see why this pick is the standard by which the draft will be seen.

Zeke has made the team better and has not played a down yet. D Mac might be let go by September??? We will see. His fumbling and Collins keeping up with him downfield in Green Bay made me want an upgrade.

The two DL will see playing time due to the suspensions if nothing else. Time will tell if either are more than role players.

This draft will either be graded a C- down the road or a A-. Let's talk in 4 yrs.
