My Thoughts on the State of the Cowboys

Guys:

After taking some time to recover, these are my opinions:

We are a pretty good team with good potential, but we have weak areas that must be addressed. The running game is not consistant (don't know why) and the overall offensive game plan needs work. Thirteen points is not going to consistantly win. The defense shows good potential, but I am concerned about Glenn and RW in coverage (all three Washington big plays were against Glenn). Bottom Line: We won a game we should have lost and lost a game we should have won. Right now I think we are an 8-8 team.

Some suggestions:

Get Burnet on the field as soon as possible (we need more athletic linebackers).

Move Glenn inside or replace him with Reeves. Don't leave him isolated on the outside against fast receivers (teams will be coming after him).

Integrate Price into the offense to generate more big plays and take some of the pressure off Jones.

Get Thompson more involved, the current backup running back has no explosion.

The current punt returner lacks speed, consider using Newman as a change up.

Throw the ball downfield a little more to loosen up the defense.

Note: I think the Cowboys are moving in the right direction in most areas, but it takes time.

Crayton does seem tentative and slower than you would imagine. Wouldn't mind seeing TNew back there once a game or so I suppose.

I hope Price earns more time, but have to wait and see. We need the speed IMO.

Burnett getting on the field would be excellent. Hopefully that starts this week. Interesting to see if Fujita can start earning some more PT.

And someone slap James upside the head and tell him to do something. James and Singleton have been very quiet so far.

I agree. Aren't the LBs suppose to shine in 3-4 ?? I rarely hear their names called and have yet to see them tackle RB for loss or QB for sacks? Fujita...comeon down! Hell, I even heard Shanle's name called for a sack or pressure.

BTW, note to BP and Zimmer. Stick to 3 man line and blitz 1 or 2 instead of standard 4 man front....we don't do so well on straight up pass rush....just in case you haven't noticed. :bang2:

I agree with this here. Send Ware on a rush to the outside of the tackle, with a blitzer coming to the tackles inside, giving Ware a free shot or a matchup versus a RB trying to pick up the blitz. I don't like seeing him constantly take on bigger OT's without much help. He will get better with time as well.

Ware gets alot of hype. But, remeber the LT is usually the best OL on the opposing team. If I am a betting man, I take the veteran LT match up versus a Rookie undersized LB anyday.
Ware will get better and may even become somewhat dominate. But to expect consistent pressure and sacks from a rookie who's changing position is a bit much. He really needs to be moved around like most people suggested. (see Julian Peterson)

Nice "Non-Homerish" review and right on the money in my opinion!

I think of Ware as an oversized LB and an undersized DE.

At 6'4" and 255, he's definitely not undersized for a LB.
