The biggest news to come out of Wade Phillips' briefing following today's brief walkthrough at the Alamodome was that he was disappointed in how the team approached Tuesday's practice.

The Cowboys open the preseason Thursday night in Oakland.

"We've addressed that," Phillips said. "It's a great opportunity for a lot of these guys and our veterans too; our guys that can play need to get ready to play. Even if they're going to play a limited amount of time, they need to get ready to play. If we had played yesterday we wouldn't have done very well, so it will be interesting to see how we do in the ballgame itself."

Phillips didn't elaborate when asked why the team wouldn't be mentally sharp just days away from its preseason opener.

"We discussed those things, and I thought they were better today as far as their attitude going in. But for whatever reason I just didn't think we had a good practice (Tuesday)," Phillips said. "It was an opportunity to step forward a little bit and get ready to play and we weren't ready to play.

"Like I said I'm glad we weren't playing yesterday because we wouldn't have done very well in my opinion."

Hmm, Galloway was saying yesterday that he saw Phillips giving an impassioned speech to the team, but he never heard anyone say what it was all about... Guess this was it.

I am just happy Wade is calling them out on this last year he would have swept it under the rug

No need to worry, we're the best walkthrough team in the NFL. :)

Phillips Disappointed In Tuesday's Practice
Posted by jellis at 8/12/2009 1:26 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

In general, Wade Phillips likes to point out the bright side of things. I've been to every one of his training camps with the Cowboys, and I can probably count on one hand the number of times he's been critical of a player or the team.

So you'll imagine the surprise when the head coach said he wasn't pleased with yesterday's practice. He said the team wasn't ready to play mentally. Either they were lackadaisical after three straight two-a-days, or they didn't know their assignments, or they were looking ahead to the preseason game, or something.

Wade was not pleased.

"For whatever reason I just didn’t think we had a good practice," Phillips said. "It was an opportunity to step forward a little bit and get ready to play and we weren’t ready to play. Like I said I’m glad we weren’t playing yesterday because we wouldn’t have done very well in my opinion."

Phillips said the sluggish practice would make Thursday's 7 p.m. (CST) kickoff interesting. He and his staff discussed things with the players and he said the attitude was better going into today's walkthrough.

Note to self: take Raiders and the points.

You may want to make a note to get counseling for a gambling habit since you would have to be sick to bet on a pre-season game. :laugh1:

When we lost a home game to the sorry-*** Rams in 1992, Jimmy said he wasn't surprised, noting that we practiced like turds the entire week.

I was kind of alluding to this team not learning anything...

We will find out if the staff can get through to them at least the staff is publicly addressing it and talking to the players about it. As for winning or losing this pre-season game I could care less but I do expect the players to practice hard every day they hit the field

I kind of want them to look good myself. They didn't look good last preseason and while you can only take so much out of that it probably indicated the lack of quality depth the team had.

You train as you fight or in the NFL you play like you practice. This maybe making a mountain out of a mole hill, but this could emphasize that we've learned nothing from last year.

Could one person, just one person stand up and be a leader for this team.

And yet they started the season 3-0

Its repeated again and again, but its never enough. Preseason. Means. Nothing.

That said, i'd like the starters to look good too. ha And no injuries.

Was it a 3-game season?

Unless they do well, in which case it will suddenly be very significant. Both sides overreact, but only one side gets called out.

Now you're talking.

No it wasnt a 3 game season, but if you suck in preseason, shouldnt you suck to start out the season?? Yes, if we come out and score on two drives with starters in, there will be SB talk, if God forbid we go 4 and out a few times there will be next years draft talk by some.

Heck if we go 4-0, i wont think any different going into the Tampa game then if we go 0-4. Preseason means nothing.

Well let's see: pre-season games are generally played by a bunch of backups and waiver wire types, whereas reg season games are played by the best of the best. So, no, sucking in pre-season does not preordain doom.
