I've been gathering predictions from the media throughout camp for the "Crystal Ball" section of our daily coverage in the Express-News.

The forecasted records have ranged from 7-9 to 10-6. I think only a couple had the Cowboys winning a playoff game. Most said they wouldn't reach the Super Bowl tournament.

Then came an e-mail Monday from Chris Duel of ESPN 1250 "The Zone" in San Antonio.

"The Cowboys will finish 11-5, good for second place in the NFC East and a wild card berth," Duel wrote. "The chip on the shoulder leads to a win over the Giants at Cowboys Stadium, then a divisional playoff win at Minnesota. After a shocking win in the NFC Championship at Philadelphia, the Cowboys lose in the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots. Even the Super Bowl berth isn't enough to save Wade Phillips' job. Wade "voluntarily" steps aside and Mike Shanahan is named Cowboys head coach on Valentine's Day - one week after the Super Bowl."

Talk about going out on a limb.

I'd take it. Winning a playoff game and losing Wade would be nice. It would be like having our cupcakes and eating them too.

We'd have to win the division for that to happen.

Though we've proven we can win in the wind tunnel known as Giants Stadium.

But this scenario is still impossible, given that we'd have to play at Philly later.

I'll stick to my new prediction, Vikings vs Chargers.

Yesterday it was Cardinals vs Chargers.

I still think we may get to the NFC Championship game. The winner of the Cards and Vikes will beat us.

Impossible. How could we play the Giants in Dallas (in the first round of the playoffs) if we don't win the NFC East?

I think the Cardinals were the biggest fluke in recent history. I don't see them getting out of the first round again, and suspect they'll get challenged by somebody in their division, unlike last year.

Nor the Vikes. Favre is an old man who played like it down the stretch last year. I see the real competition coming from the Giants, Eagles, and somebody from the NFC South.

If Philly makes it, then that's two wild cards out of the East. It's possible.

My biggest problem is with NE getting there. I'm not sold on that team like everyone else is. In my mind I see SD and someone from the NFC east in the SB. And I like our chances.

7-9 and third place in the NFC East.

Just accept it guys, it don't hurt as bad if you just accept it.

I accept the fact you don't know your butt from a hole in the ground.

I'll take that play off win first. Maybe a Divisional Championship, and then think about winning the SB.

And just what credible evidence do you have to support the notion that we are going to the Superbowl?

well, it'd be possible if both the Cowboys and the Giants were to make it to the NFC Championship game.

However, two wild card teams will never play each other in the first round of the playoffs.

Agree. There is a long list of SB losers not making the playoffs the next year. Their saving grace is their division. I also don't understand teh Viking love fest. They barely, and I mean barely, beat a Giants team, at home, the final game of the season, in a game the Giants had nothing to play for just to get in the playoffs and lose to the Iggles at home.
