Roy Williams survives poor outing

Roy Williams was one of the few Cowboys who didn't rise to the occasion Saturday night.

The former Texas star finished with only one catch for 14 yards in the 24-17 win. On a slant pattern early in the fourth quarter, Williams had an inexcusable drop on third and 4. That was the last of three passes that came his way.

During the Cowboys' final possession, which took nearly 6 minutes off the clock, Miles Austin, John Phillips and even Sam Hurd had receptions while Tony Romo and Jason Garrett ignored Williams.

Still, Wade Phillips said Monday that Williams won't see a reduction in playing time.

"We still have hopes that the things we see in practice (from Williams) are going to happen," Phillips said. "I don't know how many touchdown passes he's caught now (six), but he's caught some of those. He's a real threat, especially in the red zone. But he's going to keep working at it and we're going to keep working at it."

Even Kevin Ogletree had a better outing than Williams. The undrafted rookie caught two passes for 23 yards, including a 17-yarder during Dallas' final scoring drive, a 13-play, 74-yard possession that opened the second half and ended with Marion Barber's 2-yard sweep around left end that gave Dallas a commanding 24-3 advantage.

"I've said this all along if a guy can play and help you, I like to get them in the ballgame," Phillips said of Ogletree and Hurd getting action. "They just practice better. They're more team players. They get to be a part of the team - if they can help the team. Now a guy that we don't think is talented enough or at the point where he needs to be playing, we don't do that. But if the guy's good enough to play, the Sam Hurds of the world, you can utilize those guys because they'll come through for you."

Ogletree and Hurd certainly did just that. Williams? Not so much.

Ogletree needs more playing time, even if it's at Roy's expense. Sorry Roy

Wade "hope is a strategy" Phillips...

Do whats best for the team and finally bench him.

Haha. I like that name.

Don't punish the whole team because you are too weak to bench your overpaid supersulker who swindled your owner our of $45M. That's Jerry's problem. Your job is to win games and Ogletree will help the Cowboys do that more than Williams can.

I'll be so happy when we release Mr. Overrated and put the guys on the field who want to work hard and win championships.

What would the cap hit be to release número uno?

He is the third best receiver on our team and easily Romo's 4th favorite target. He doesn't look his way because he knows who to throw to when we need a play.

I was so happy to see Sam get some action. I love me some Hurd. As I said a few weeks ago, I really like our WR's and I hope we spread the field a bit more.

I like the 12 packages, but to pass, I'd prefer if we spread em with our receivers and let Romo do work.

And as far as cutting Roy or benching him, I'm not in favor of that. He's so thin-skinned we need to handle is confidence carefully.

Count me in for seeing more Hurd. You can tell the guy works hard and he makes plays every time he's on the field.

I'd like to see more Ogletree too in certain situations... Not as much as Hurd, but definitely more time. Hurd has more experience in the offense so you can count on him to be in the right spot. He seems to have great hands too.

I hate when we go 1 WR and its Williams on the field, seems like a waste. Teams aren't afraid of Williams. Now put Austin on the field instead of Williams and you take a safety out of the box to setup the run.

He's in there because it's probably a run play. He's our best run blocking WR. He can at least say "Hey I'm the number 1....when it comes to run blocking".

I would think it would be better to have Austin in there because he draws more attention than Williams.

I'm not sorry. Get the performers more time. More Ogletree please.

Steve Dennis was saying Ogletree should play over Roy and the real delima will be next year when Ogletree has completely surpassed Roy.

Roy contract is playing a factor.

IMO its time to rotate.

Agreed...you have to put egos aside and get players on the field who make plays.
