DALLAS - Roy Williams bashing has been popular among former Cowboys this offseason. Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith have all taken turns disparging the play of the former Texas standout.

But at least one former Dallas star is in Williams' corner: Drew Pearson.

In an interview at Wednesday's ribbon cutting ceremony at Cowboys Stadium, Roger Staubach's favorite target said he has faith in Williams, the team's No. 1 WR after Terrell Owens was released in March.

"I had a talk with him a couple of weeks ago when our paths happened to cross, and he told me what he's been doing since the beginning of March, working with the other receivers; working with the quarterbacks, including (Tony) Romo; working on how to develop the trust, the love, the relationships with not only Romo, but all the quarterbacks, all the receivers, all the offense," Pearson said. "And that's what you've got to do, that's what it takes.

"So I give him a pass to the head of the class. He's proven. He's done some great things in the NFL. And I've got to feel like he is really excited and motivated to do some of those things and even greater things in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, being a Texas guy. I think he will step up and do what he has to do."

Pearson was lukewarm about the rest of the wideouts. While acknowledging Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd and Isaiah Stanback all have potential, Pearson said time could be running out on the foursome.

"I think they're a good group," Pearson said. "The biggest thing about them is the label of potential - they are potentially good. And that means they haven't done it yet. Once we get rid of that label potential, then I can speak better of whether these guys have what it takes to be productive on a consistent basis in the NFL."

Cowboys will be more relaxed without Owens
By Tom Orsborn on May 28, 09 01:02 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

DALLAS - So says Drew Pearson.

The Cowboys former star receiver called Terrell Owens "a dominating influence" on the younger wideouts and believes his absence will allow them to "blossom and grow."
QB Tony Romo will also benefit from having T.O. in Buffalo rather than in his ear all the time, Pearson believes.

"I just think it helps the whole atmosphere," Pearson said Wednesday at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Cowboys Stadium. "I'm not blaming everything on him - the reason why they didn't have success last year, the Philly game, and all that debacle and all that - I'm not blaming it on one guy. But the atmosphere is very important and the players have to feel relaxed in that atmosphere and not intimidated, especially by another player. And I think he has that kind of presence that would intimidate you, so therefore, it's better to eliminate that and let's see if we can win without that type of presence. We didn't win with it, so let's see now if we can win without it."

Will Drew Pearson ever get in Ring of Honor?
By Tom Orsborn on May 28, 09 12:51 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

DALLAS - Roger Staubach's favorite target has made no secret of his desire to join the other great members of the Tom Landry Cowboys in the Ring of Honor.

But Pearson sounded at peace with the matter when I talked to him about it Wednesday at the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Cowboys Stadium. He also made it clear he wouldn't mind the honor coming at the new stadium rather than Texas Stadium, where he starred in the 1970s.
"The meaning is the honor, the achievement, not where you hang," Pearson said. "The recognition, it would be nice to have. And, hopefully, one day it will come. When it comes, that will be God's time. Hopefully, I will be around if it does come.

"A lot of people tell me that it will happen: People that you played with, people that are in the Ring, people that aren't in the Ring but were great teammates of yours. When they kind of tell you you deserve that recognition, it gives me the credibility and the thinking that maybe one year it will happen. But to put a timetable on it and say, yeah, it's this year, next year, 10 years from now, that's out of my control."

I agree with Drew on Williams, the guy is a very good receiver IMO. I see no reason he should not be a pro bowl caliber WR for the next several years.

I'm also a little put off with Jerry Jones for not having him in the ROH by now.:bang2:

There's no good reason Drew has not been inducted into the ROH yet.

In Jerry Jones' mind, there's a very good reason.

Drew Pearson said on the Michael Irvin show that RW doesn't run good routes. Both Irvin and Drew kinda agreed that RW is not the #1 WR until he prooves himself to be one. I guess Drew's opinion has changed since he finally met RW.

I thought it was disrespectfully on RW's part when they interviewed him at the Cowboys' golf tournament and he didn't really say much about Drew (with Drew sitting right next to him) and went on and said how he loved watching Randy Moss growing up and kept going on about Randy Moss. At least lie and say you watched game tapes of Drew.

If you watch the other interviews, "Cricket" Anderson had good things to say about Moose and also Jason Witten and good things to say about Dupree. RW said he wasn't old enough to watch Drew play. You think Witten was old enough to watch Dupree? Witten at least said he watched tapes of Dupree.

My $.02 on RW.

Something tells me Drew Pearson will be one of the first to be inducted in the ROH. He's been engaged in quite a few Dallas Cowboy functions in the past year or so.

Whatever ill feelings Jerry may have had about Drew, I think they've been resolved.

I'd like to think DP will be next in the ROH.

Unfortunately we always seem to lose the game on the day of the induction. :(

Thanks for posting that. I'll give RW the benefit of the doubt from last year. Obviously more than Drew thinks he'll do ok replacing TO (in his own way) otherwise they wouldn't have let TO go.

I think way too much emphasis is on Romo, Garrett and RW when more should be on the OL. The fact Romo got so beat up in that last game of the year should bet a lot more attention. JMO.

I think expecting Williams to watch tapes of receivers who played before he was born is a bit much to hold against him. He admires Moss' game because he grew up watching Moss' game. Nothing wrong with that.

Your expectations for him in that regard are likely higher than Pearson's, who probably understands Williams' admiration for those he grew up watching.

Be nice if these writers would do justice to what the players said by not including Aikman as a Williams basher. Aikman clarified his comments, saying that it isn't that he doesn't believe Williams has the ability to get the job done, only that it will be the biggest busted trade if he doesn't. That isn't a bash, but really the reality of the situation.

Misapplying what Aikman said is almost as rampant as writers saying Dallas gave up a first, third and sixth for Williams, without mentioning that the Cowboys got a seventh back (and some writers even think Dallas also traded a seventh in the deal instead).

It amazes me how guys supposedly trained to present facts routinely fail to properly research their subjects, or to ignore the facts because it lessens the impact of their stories.

I love Drew Pearson. Such a class act always.

Jerry, you done the guy wrong man. He's long overdue the ROH.

He and Jerry feuded over a patent on a clothing line. I am convinced that is the only reason he is not in the ROH and I do not approve of that.

The funny thing about a lot of board members is that when they agree with the (player/ex player) all of a sudden, that guy is brilliant.

In one breath, if let's say Tony Dorsett says that Owens was great and this team will suffer now that he's gone - Most of the board will call him dumb and useless, but if let's say "Tony Dorsett" turns around and says that, Romo is the greatest QB in the NFL, and once he gets everything together, there will be no doubt.

All of a sudden, that same player will go from dumb to brilliant. I hope some of you never become teachers because I wouldn't believe **** that comes out of your mouth.
