Look for Pacman to stick at left corner

Tom Orsborn

Wade Phillips says he just wants to get Pacman Jones more work. But the real reason Jones will start at left corner Friday is that the Cowboys want an insurance policy in case Terence Newman can't make it back for the opener at Cleveland on Sept. 7.

Newman has been sidelined with a groin injury since early in training camp. Although he could start practicing again next week, there's always the chance he could suffer another injury while trying to compensate for the groin.

With that in mind, they want Pacman Jones to be ready to start Sept. 7, provided, of course, he gets reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Rookie Mike Jenkins started the last two games in place of Newman, but he's just not ready to start in the regular season. Pacman still needs to shake off some rust from his year off, but he's not far off from being back to his old self. Three quarters of action Friday against the Texans just may do the trick.

actually Newman said the other day if tonight's game was a regular season game, that he'd play

I dont think there's any way he misses the Cleveland game unless he has a major setback or soemthing during practice

Man, I am so fired up when this defense gets healthy and is firing on all cylinders.

It's makes sense that Pacman would move over to that side since he is outperforming Jenkins. Newman moves to the slot in Nickel and Pacman plays the left. I am not sure why this was not done at the beginning unless they were not sure they could trust Pacman and count on him being reinstated.

I really hope it has nothing to do with Newmans injury.

He said that all last year too

Newman is already working on his coach speech.

I think Wade had said something that he just wanted Pacman to get use to playing one side again before he moves him around. I think the same goes for Jenkins. They're probably just playing him where he is most comfortable so he is put in a position to show his skills and gain confidence.

You know you have awesome depth when your first round draft pick is counted as your 4th CB.

Maybe it's me, but it seems like we always have at least one starting CB injured. Lately, it's been Newman more often.

Or maybe hes not as good as everyone thought. Justin Harell, 18th overall by the Packers last year was the 4th or 5th defensive tackle on their depth chart, which is relatively thin? Does that mean they have great depth? Or their first round pick isn't good enough to beat out average football players?

TNew, Henry and Pac (100% rust free) are all better than Jenkins now.

Which corner on this team is an "average" football player?

Maybe its a talent thing. Pacman seems to be more of a shut down corner like TNew is and jenkins with more size to be on the other side. Maybe its strictly a certain kind of personnel we want on the field at one time.

Depends on how you run your defense. Look at how we played when we had Deion.

It's a lot like the difference between left tackle and right tackle on offense. The techniques are different on each side. And because most quarterbacks are right-handed, offenses usually put their best pass-protecting tackle on the quarterback's blind side (offense's left), and defenses usually put their best cornerback on the left side (offense's right).

I would like for Adam to demonstrate tonight that he is becoming more comfortable in zone coverage.....He's great in man to man.
