Nagy & Smith

Right now I would be more than happy to start the season with Free,Nagy,Gurode,Kosier and Smith. I don't care of Nagy is a rookie or a 7th rd pick I care more about the play and honestly he is looking better right now than Davis or Colombo. Will he make mistakes yes he will also learn. Strange thing is going into pre season I was expecting the rookies to be getting called for holding and jumping off sides and yet that has not been the case these young guys are doing the job.

As I watch, the issue is strength and technique, which you would expect from a young OL. However, your observation about penalties is a good one. It means, at least in my mind, that they are intelligent enough to grasp certain things. That's a good thing in an OL. I fully expect these young guys to get better as they have time to learn and gain strength. As an OL, all too often, you are forced into bad technique if you don't have the strength to fend off stronger players. As this improves, all the rest of their game will also improve. These guys know the proper technique many times. They have been playing almost their entire lives in some cases. They just need to understand the offense, what the scheme calls for, how to be ready to position themselves and above all, get stronger. I'm pretty excited about their potential. It's just not their yet and I don't expect it to be. It's going to take some time IMO.

I fully expect mistakes but I see mistakes made by vets around the league. Right now I would just as soon go with the guys I mentioned. Having said that we still have 2 more pre season games and how these guys do over the course of the next 2 games will give us a better read on their ability to come in and start.

I don't think it matters. Smith is starting regardless. If Holland doesn't get it straight, either Nagy, Arkin or Costa will be at the other Guard spot. It is what it is. Gotta go with what you got.

I'll just say I'm pretty happy with Nagy out there. Granted he made a mistake but he did more things right than wrong. As for Holland I have not given up on him completely but he can't just be marginally better in my view to keep the job

If we see Holland for half the seasons, we'll be lucky IMO. I just don't think much of his ability to stay healthy.

I think not much more can be said about Smith. His feet are not as fluid like Anthony Munoz's....but, I'm still waiting to see a tackle with those type of feet. Personally, I think his footwork is fine for a veteran, much less a rookie. He sometimes rocks back a bit too much on his heels, but recovers well from it. Lots of Pro Bowlers rock back and can't recover as well. I'll take his footwork over Flozell's and Colombo's, on their best days in their prime.

I liked Arkin in the Denver game. I think he had some issues with the Chargers because the guys around him were making mistakes and it collapsed onto him. I think Arkin could probably be a guy that *at the moment* could do a serviceable job if made the starter with Gurode and Free next to him.

I was actually pretty impressed with Nagy. I thought he was a full time center in college, so I didn't expect much at guard, but he surprised me. Again, another guy I think would be a solid starter right now.

I like the idea of playing Nagy and Arkin, moving Kosier to RG. I'm not nutty about Holland coming back to start...but, we don't know exactly what Garrett is thinking. We don't know...maybe Garrett is playing a game to see how Holland responds and if he doesn't, Nagy might be starter come week 1.

YR

Well Nagy or Arkin who ever starts will have a good challenge this week as they will have to face Kevin Williams at 6'5" and 311 he is a handful. I look forward to seeing how they do

I agree. That will be a bit of a test there. I am not disappointed in what I see from these guys. I am not as pleased as Rich on Smith's kick slide but I do think he is right in the fact that Smith has more talent right now then Flo or Colombo ever did when we got them. I think that's true.

I agree, Smith needs to get better at footwork I do like the fact even with less than perfect footwork he has held his own and just as important the kid is willing to work and learn spending time after practice to improve as a player. He is not a kid who is content with making it to the NFL he seems to want much more than that.

IMO Arkin will be the better of the two interior line rookies. Nagy has the strength advantage as of now coming from a big time program whereas Arkin is a small school guy. Let Mike Woicik have them for a full offseason and I'm feeling good about the 3 interior line positions for awhile. My biggest line concern is backup T, both Young and Parnell have been pretty suspect against 2nd teamers and shoe salesman.

I thought Nagy played well but I thought Arkin played better the week before. This last game, on that run where Phillip Tanner ran without his helmet, watch downfield at Arkin just completely anhilate some poor defender. Guy was downfield blowing psople up even when Tanner looked like he was all but down. Really like Nagy. Really Really like Arkin. Really Really Really like Smith..

I just re-watched the 1st half of last nights game. I concentrated on Nagy and Smith on each play. I thought both of these guys played really well. Nagy was consistently getting to the second level and overall was very athletic and active, and from what I could tell, made very few mistakes. Smith is extremely athletic and impressive, and in my opinion played better than last week, and I thought he played a good game last week.

I don't pretend to be a scout, but I am excited about our line this season.

According to Eatman:

Nagy Continues With First-Team Offense

After evaluating the tape of last week’s game against the Chargers, the Cowboys apparently like what they saw from rookie Bill Nagy.
The seventh-round pick from Wisconsin is back at left guard, working with the first-team offense.

For now, Nagy seems to be leading the pack that also includes the injured Montrae Holland, rookie fourth-round pick David Arkin, and possibly Phil Costa, the backup center whom owner Jerry Jones said caught his eye the most during training camp.

For all of you on the Holland bandwagon... remember back to last year when he got a chance to start and got pulled after 1 quarter of play. Holland is not a solution. As another poster said, "I don't pretend to be a scout or anything.." but Holland is horrible and both Nagy and Arkin are playing better than Holland did at any point last year. My 2 cents.

Well if we're truly going with playing the best player, then we've got to believe that if Holland goes out there, he's the best player.

well to put it gently the Chargers D line is one of the best in the NFL; the Bronco's D line is one of the WORST in the NFL.

I like Nagy.

He's not some road grader but he is going to get himself between the defender and the ball and he can get out in space and block.

It would be ashame for the Cowboys to start Holland over a young player who has shown so much in just 3 1/2 weeks.

I agree with catch17

I feel dirty now.

We haven't even seen Murray and Carter yet and I already think this draft looks good.
Smith (will be a Pro Bowler someday)
Carter (we'll see)
Murray (we'll see)
Arkin (will make the team)
Thomas (ha spotential--fine for 5th rd)
Harris (great value for 6th rd)
Chapas (meh..but 7th rd)
Nagy (steal in the 7th)
