No one in the organization wanted to draft a class of projected backup players. No one except Jerry Jones. How did he pull it off? Here's how:
There were two cards each time Dallas was on the clock. One card was a consensus pick of the front office and scouts. Another blank card was tucked away inside Jones' jacket pocket. Just nanoseconds before each official card was handed in, Jones would write his choice on the blank card, take off running, breaking the speed of light barrier, switched cards with the Dallas rep at Radio City Music Hall, race back, and take his seat again at Dallas headquarters. Jones moved so fast that no one literally knew he had left and returned. Stephen never had an opportunity to snatch the new card out of his father's hands. Jones has skills.
Disclaimer: Any resemblance between the above paragraph and either an episode of The Big Bang Theory or The Flash premiering on The CW this fall is purely coincidental.
From memory, the picks that year were:
Brewster
Jason Williams
Butler
Brandon Williams
A CB and Safety that might have both been from Cincinnati and one got beat by the Kicker in a footrace. The CB might have been Mickens.
Buehler?sp
Was the A&M QB that year?
The TCU LB/Safety that ended up with a bad knee
John Phillps
I was thinking they took that ND OT but I only see 3 white guys.
I don't think that was the AOA year, but I'm not certain on that.
I'll go with:
Brewster at the bottom
Phillips next to Brewster
Buehler in the middle
Magee the white guy on the outside.
CB Mickens with the goatee.
Jason Williams
Robert Brewster
Stephen McGee
Victor Butler
Brandon Williams
DeAngelo Smith
Michael Hamlin
David Buehler
Stephen Hodge
John Phillips
Mike Mickens
Manuel Johnson
This was the draft that set this team back 4 years. Horrible job by Jerry and company cause this team was STACKED the year before and Jerry decided to do a "special teams draft"........and yes he actually referred it as such.
