NASCAR alignment

Back in the day the Giants had a lineup that helped them win the Super Bowl. They called it the NASCAR formation. You had Osi, JPP, Tuck, and Kiwanuka on the line together.

I wonder if Marinelli would try this out and take Crawford off the field on some passing downs.

Gregory - Hardy - Mincey - Lawrence

That seems like it would be a nightmare for teams in 3rd and long. Even with Crawford in there it would be difficult, but these four guys? Yikes. Gregory and Hardy coming off the right side? I'm not even sure what you're supposed to do to block that.

Another thing is, if this offensive line can't get better in pass protection going up against these monsters all the time, I don't know what will do the trick.

I've kind of been assuming that Marinelli will do that. We know for a fact that he is going to kick Hardy down inside and bring in Gregory to play along with Crawford and Lawrence:

Lawrence - Crawford - Hardy - Gregory

It is just one easy substitution from that to your line of:

Lawrence - Mincey - Hardy - Gregory

I think that is something Marinelli will do (although I obviously don't want to use the Giants "NASCAR" moniker).

I'm so excited about this year's DL and all of the groupings and substitutions, that I can barely wait.

I always liked playing defense better than offense and when I watch games, my favorite part is the defensive line. Nothing is as great as a DL that is overpowering the offense is creating havoc with it's pass rush.

I actually think the Cowboys would be better off with Crawford over Mincey in that formation, but that's just my opinion.

Maybe. I think it might be a closer call than you think though. I think Mincey has a ton of upside, especially if he is dropping weight.

Why is it called NASCAR? Is it supposed to stand for something? Speed in a straight line (to the QB)?

They've mentioned it on the podcasts, it's just a way to get our best speed rushers on the field together to get after the QB.

But at the ripe age of 31, I don't see Mincey getting any better from last year; I'm not saying he will regress, I just wouldn't count on him progressing. Crawford is emerging from almost a full year of work at the 3-tech. Granted, it wasn't all pretty this past season, but he showed up enough to lead me to believe this defense could be very dangerous. With the potential for a pass rush threat coming from both sides of the line, a 3-tech in a Marinelli ran defense can wreak havoc on the inside on passing downs.

Mincey should certainly have his opportunities as well, but I am a big supporter of giving the youth with at least equal talent the nod at starter and letting the veteran past-his-prime player work relief. As the game progresses, particularly in the 4th quarter, you work in the veteran players more to try and match fresh legs against a potential exhausted blocker, be it OL or other.

Jeremy Mincey at the age of 30 just had one of his best years last year. He seems to think that cutting more weight will allow him to be even more effective this year.

Even at the age of 31, he hasn't had much playing time.

There will be times Gregory lines up outside Hardy or Lawrence with Mincey and Crawford inside. Gregory may also play the Joker or Jack or whatever terminology you want. There will be a surprise or two along the DL out of camp and they could play a rotation role on pass rush downs.

I like the versatility of the group. Hardy and Mincey can kick inside on a limited basis, Lawrence can play the left or right side, McClain and Crawford could both play the 3 or the 1, and Crawford could kick outside on a limited basis, as well.

I don't disagree that Mincey had his best year last year. But I still say for the long-term betterment of the team, Tyrone Crawford should get the nod in the middle, if the choice is only between those two.
