When you are in a tight cap situation, I think the last thing you want to do is add more money to the cap. Livings was probably the second best lineman we had a year ago behind Smith. You really are going to cut him, add money to the cap and then pay another player to replace him? Doesn't make a ton of sense.

Why wouldn't you just get rid of the guy that is making about 9m too much this year, Doug Free?

I'd guess this is less about the possibility of cutting Livings, and more that they had that restructure to use if needed. They got under the cap for Spencer's tag and decided to just keep their powder dry on the Livings restructure. No need to use it until they need it.

It looks like his restructuring could create as much as $1.2M cap space this year. I guess enough to sign a low cost FA if they needed the money before a Spencer/Romo deal was done.

From his salary figures, I'd guess he'll be around until next offseason at the earliest, and more likely the offseason of 2015, to provide the least dead money pain when he iSight released.

Smith, especially in the second half of last season.

Mmm.. that's debatable. Smith really struggled last year at LT.

Either way, its not nearly as outrageous a claim as some would believe.

It's not really debatable. Smith didn't allow a single sack the second half of the season and was pretty darn solid in run support. Livings giving up more sacks than our LT is inexcusable.

Let's release our best lineman from last year.. good call.

LOL.......best Lineman? Talk about a laughable statement. Smith is the ONLY guy on the Oline that doesnt need to be replaced. Free, Beardeau, and Costa should all be cut today. Livings probably should be also, but you cant cut everyone.

In run support?

I wasn't referring to a half of the season, or a few games, or a random selection of games.. i said over the course of the entire season. Over the season, i believe Livings was the most consistent lineman we had. Smith clearly had his struggles, although he performed fine for it being his second year and first at LT, imo. This year, im sure Smith will be far and away our best lineman all year.

Who played better than him over the course of the entire season last year?

Wowza!

I'd say Tyron but he was definitely our most consistent linemen but he struggled a lot out of the gate which was to be expected for a new LT. I'm a little shocked people think what you said was that outlandish. Livings was one of our best linemen last year which doesn't say much but he sure was decent to good. If anything i'd keep him for depth. He performed his job to the best of his capabilities.....unlike the rest of the linemen who underperformed.

Eatman & Broaddus watch all of the game film & both commented that even Bernadeau was more consistent than Livings, but in my opinion that's not saying much.

He's actually making 1.7 million in base which is the reason for the thread. Cowboys never filed his restructure with the nfl. If they draft an OG high, I would expect he takes the fall. Or if they sign a vet like Slauson or Moore.

I'd have no problem with Dallas cutting him if the Cowboys brought in an upgrade. But I'd rather have him stay until we have upgrades at center and the other guard spot as well.

At the least, I'd like to see him compete with our other guard candidates if Dallas only brings in one replacement.

Bernadeau was consistent alright. Consistently bad. Seems like whenever our media starts talking up a player it means the Cowboys are trying to drum up trade interest before he gets cut.

As for Livings it would almost be impossible to sign anyone to start that will have a lower cap hit. If million dollar starters were just hanging out anywhere, why would teams be so interested in paying 6, 7 and 8m per year to the free agents? Why are we paying 10m a year for the likes of Doug Free? And 2 to 3m a year for Berny and Livings?

Livings our best lineman?? LOL Please don't go by websites that rank players, watch the games. He was mediocre in pass protection at best and they were all horrible at run blocking, hence the lowest output EVER by the team.

I don't understand how anybody would be okay with Livings performance last season.

That oline last season was one of the worst olines in Dallas history.

Saying that Livings was the best is laughable.

Livings underwent minor knee surgery two weeks ago but should be ready for camp if on the roster.

Only way we release Livings or Bernadeau are if we sign a free agent and draft a OG in the first two rounds. They aren't getting released before that happens.
