Alright ...NFL Officials are part of ther field. You cannot use officals as an excuse for getting in the way of a player on either side of the ball - Well have to live with that. But what about dressing up for a game with football protective equipment?

Shoulder pads

helmet (modified specifically for officials)

It really does not make too much sense to have unprotected officials, officiate in a full contact sports where players outweigh officials by more than 100lbs.

Suit the officials up with equipment before someone gets very seriously injured.

Has an official ever been seriously injured in the thousands of games over the past 70+ years? I'm sure the answer to that question mirrors the answer to whether refs should wear shoulder pads.

What they need are some athletic referees that can actually get out of the way, instead of getting in it.

Exactly, Steve. If the had more gear they might be less apt to try to get out of the way to begin with.

The number of injuries to officials is very rare. I think they do wear some soft foam padding in their uniforms, similar to a soccer goalies uniform.

Yes so they can be even slower to get in position to make a call or get out of the way of a play. Outfitting some of the geezers they have out there with shoulder pads is akin to making them run around with a 200 lb weight strapped to their shoulders. No thx.

I don't think adding extra gear to a 75 year old back judge will help anything. It would only put them farther out of position.

I think Ed Hochuli is strong enough. I don't know about the other refs.

Maybe they should just wear a cup in case Paul Crewe is starting at QB.

Obscure reference?

I could see some type of head gear for the refs I would not go as far as putting shoulder pads on them

why doesnt the league hire guys that were former nfl hopefuls that didn't quite make it.

train them in being refs and then you will have athletes out there calling the games instead of old guys or that one ref with the season tickets to the gun show, though that guy might be okay to stick around. If you are over 50 you shouldnt be reffing. for sure if you are over 60.

Would an NFL team design a play using a referee to set the pick?

Putting gear on an official is just not a good idea...for reasons already stated.

However, what would be a good idea is to hang a barf bag around McPuke's neck so the other players don't have to wallow around in all that waste...

Just an idea...
