National Football Post : Cowboys "love" Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt

Who do you think is the safest player in the draft?

Good question. Either Peterson or Julio Jones imo

Barring a complete mental breakdown I dont see how Patrick Peterson isnt at least a pro-bowler at corner or safety.

Julio Jones looks like a Plaxico Buress/Andre Johnson to me. Just a total nightmare for corners. Cant jam him and very tough to bring down in the open field.

Casztanzo and Carimi are two other safe players but have much lower ceilings than PP and Jones. Tons of experience and production between them and they also bring position versatility, which gives them an even better chance of being a plus starter somewhere for years.

I think jerry will trade down, guarantee he doesn't want to pay top ten draft pick cash.
I just want an ol that can be pencilled in for the next ten years.

That said picks can't be signed til a cba is in place right?

I'd love to get Watt in the 1st, at number 9 or otherwise.

People think cause he's white and a DE, he's an unathletic, overachiever, space eater. Couldn't be further from the truth. If anything, this guy has as much, or more, upside as Tyron Smith AND the production to go along with it.

I am with the Count on this

I meant an impact in the way people expect around here, I don't think you need a 1st rounder to do the things a 3-4 DE does, but maybe I'm wrong.

I can promise you he won't be making 20 TFL in the 3-4

we might 3 or 4 good plays from him a game I get that from Igor

Watt in 2009, registering 44 tackles, 15.5 TFL and 4.5 sacks. This past year Watt continued to improve. He had 62 tackles, 21 TFL, 7 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

consider this was a 4-3 D - and that was againest College players

impressive numbers - NOT

he will be another Igor

I am sorry I just don't see it the logic behind this move

Sounds like we agree that its something like an 85/15 split. And in Nick Fairleys case that 15% might have killed him.

Never really figured the numbers out but I would bet your pretty dang close to what it is.

AJ Green is more safe than Jones

I've always kind of viewed 34 DE's that way too. However, Rob Ryan is the key in my mind.

I said a while back, early on in the draft process that if the team takes JJ Watt (or Cam Jordan) in round 1, then I look for Ryan to be using a lot of multiple fronts with numerous 4-man lines and 46 looks. If you kick JJ Watt inside to DT along with Jay Ratliff and have Ware and Spencer as your ends, Watt could end up being very valuable to Rob Ryan. He really has a very good pass rush, but particularly from inside.

Now, if they are just going to stick him at end and stay in a base 34, then I do agree that you could get a guy later in the draft for that... but if you plan on moving him around in multiple fronts, then Watt will be perfect for that and he has the crazy movement skills and athleticism to make an impact that way.

I think Dareus is going to be underwhelming for a #2 overall pick and Von Miller will be a straight bust.

At some point if hes just speed he will essentially be a blitzing corner off the edge instead of a pass rushing specialist w/ an array of moves and the ability to stop the run. I also think his motor runs cold and a tackle w/ decent feet can contain him no problem

You're not a lone ranger on those assumptions.

Although, I have to say I don't think either guy will be a "bust" in the JaMarcus Russell variety.

I think a lot of folks want to view Dareus as some dynamic game-changer, but I simply just don't see that with him. Never have. He's a guy with good size and terrific athletic ability for his size, that flashes every once in a while, but can often be nullified for long periods at a time. He can play DE, but doesn't bring much there because he doesn't have repitiore of pass rush moves. I think he's best suited in a 43 at DT where he can try to exploit more one-on-ones.

I just don't see Miller as a dynamic pass-rusher. He has one main pass rush move: speed. He's also on the smaller side if you're looking for a 34 OLB and doesn't make up for it with physical play, say like James Harrison. He's often consumed by offensive linemen and doesn't always show the greatest motor.

I'm not comparing the two players bit-for-bit, but I really just see Von Miller having a productive but marginally under-the-radar career like Derrick Johnson.

Both of these guys can improve a bit with training and coaching. I just am not sold on either of them as the "next great..." thing.

JMO

Watt would be sick. Guy has a huge motor and like Ware he can beat you with speed or power. No idiot factor either.
