National Football Post : Cowboys "love" Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt

More for information purposes,

but Ourlads has JJ Watt ranked number 10 overall in terms of prospects available for this year's draft.

(Smith is ranked 14 and Castonzo is ranked 19.)

I'd be madder than a wet hen - if we look his way

OT is the first order of business

Really? Last time I checked, the D gave up the most points in team history. This team needs intense, versatile guys on D, and Watt looks like the Spears that they thought they were getting in '05 (looks like a better pass-rusher and equal against the run). Basically, he's very similar to Rob Ryan's new favorite toy - Bowen.

trade down with the Rams pick up Watt, trade back up later to the bottom 1st round snag Camrini.

Cowboyszone has singly handily have changed the definition of "smoke screen" to define anything a individual disagrees with no matter how possible it is.

Simply put, if it does not fit your agenda. Call it a smoke screen.

Smoke screen for what? We have been linked to the majority of the players in the top 15.

In practically every draft for the past decade, there is one name who has slipped out that we ended up selecting. They cannot all be clever machinations.

Beat me to it. I believe quite a few people start yelling "smoke screen" because it makes them feel better to believe that our intentions are not leaking out.

The #Cowboys are playing the draft game very well. They apparently love about a half dozen prospects!

Exactly.

We love everyone but Tyron all of the sudden?

4 months ago, we loved Casntanzo and then loved everyone but him

3 months ago, we loved Prince and then loved everyone but him

2 month ago, we loved Cameron Jordan and then loved everyone but him

1 month ago, we loved Tyron Smith and then loved everyone but him

What's it tell you? Absolutely NOTHING. That at 9 the Cowboys options are open and they are doing their jobs.

Nothing matters that far back b/c its way too early in the process.

As soon as Tyron is revealed to be one of our favorites a few weeks from the draft all of the sudden several more names emerge as guys we would rather have at 9.

I think Mosley finally got Rick Roll'd.

This just crossed my mind too..probably has something to do with Garrett being the HC now..maybe at least

That's actually far from the truth.

Ask any scout worth a damn that has been around the game for a long time and they will tell you in the end, any good scout will go back to the start and evaluate their board before any of the draft process got started. Back when all you had when was game film to judge a guy. Often the best decisions are made when you stay with what got you where you were in the 1st place.

Most draft boards don't change significantly...tweaked? sure, but most of it is based on game tape

Unless your the Raiders, Bills are Bengals and that's no joke.

Anyways, that's exactly why I get a kick out everyone calling anyone saying we have interest in Watt, Jordan or any other prospect not named Tyron Smith a smoke screen. Tyron Smith has not exactly been on the top 10 radar since January. He made a mid process rise and there is still questions about where he falls. Most teams still have him as a mid first prospect.

On the flip side, when you hear these reports about Aldon Smith and players like that, yeah, that's a bit of a smoke screen.

They have pretty much told Spears and Hatcher that they arent making big plays for them. Spears, as a 1st round pick, has been pretty much what we thought he was. Our run D save for the Texas stadium finale has never really been a detriment. Its been pass protecting and the secondary.

So why would they use their highest pick in years on a comparable player to fill a hole that could easily be solved by re-signing a guy that was pretty good at it to begin with? You can find JJ Watt's in other ways. Hell, Im not so sure Brent isnt comparable.

I think they want Peterson hard. Or one of the tackles if Peterson would cost a 2nd.

Would love your opinion based on your gut feel as of now, assuming the Cowboys are not able to engineer a trade down, who do you predict they would draft? Or do you think they will trade up as long as it's not higher than 5 (or so)?

I guess the field includes Smith, Watt, Jordan, Prince, and Castonzo from what I can make out.

My gut IF DALLAS WAS FORCED TO PICK AT 9 would still be Tyron Smith. With that said, I believe they would think long and hard about Cameron Jordan and JJ Watt there. Having no FA before the draft has put this team in a awkward position. I do believe if we have had FA we would already have our RT in place and a better idea of what we have at DE in regards to the contract situations of Spears, Hatcher and Bowen.

One thing none of us know is if the Cowboys believe they can address and will have time to address the OT position via free agency and how certain they are that they want to or can sign any of the free agent DE's we have on the roster. I believe more then anything those two factors will influence who they take and what they do. At this point I'm certain they have their mind made up in both regards.

What are your thoughts on a trade up for PP?.

Do you get the sense that we would move on it if he's at 6?

Is Watt a top 15 overall prospect in this draft? A trade down to somewhere between 16-18 to pick up an extra 2nd would be nice. Our draft could then go something like- 1st-Watt,2nd(a) Cannon/Carpenter,2nd(b) Harris/Dowling/House, 3rd-Moffitt. I would have no problems with his draft. I really dont buy that we're that high on Watt anyway. Ryan usually likes his defensive players more athletic and versatile. Watt is a straight up end without great pass rushing skills that lacks elite size. He reminds me a lot of a smaller Carriker from a few years ago. Probably will be a solid NFL player, but nothing more than that.

i'm fed up of not developing our own OL(aside of Free). Its time, imho, that we get some real young talent in and let them develop. I think a DE in FA would be better served.
