The final numbers for the first game of the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics drew 13.384 million according to Nielsen. Note: that’s for the full game, not just the primetime portion.

In terms of Nielsen household rating the game averaged an 8.7, up 38 percent versus last year’s game one between the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers. Last year’s final opened with a 6.3 household rating and 9.206 million viewers. Last night was an exicting game that the Celtics won to go up 1-0 in the best of seven series and has many comparing Paul Pierce to Willis Reed

ABC claims it was the network’s best performance with men 18-34 and 18-49 since September 2005 and the highest rated game one of the finals since 2004 when game one of the Lakers/Pistons matchup drew a 9.8 and was on in 10.634 million homes. Last night’s game while viewed by 13.38 million people was on in 9.813 million homes. Last year’s game one which produced 9.206 million viewers was on in 6.99 million homes.

that's kinda what you'd expect though when the 2 biggest bandwagon franchises in the NBA go head to head in the finals

People care about this final. Bigger markets and let's face it a Spurs/Cleveland finals is boring to watch.

I bet Sundays game is up 50%

Me too, nobody different ever wins it. San Antonio and LA have the most titles in the last 10 years and that is freaking boring. I'm rooting for the Celtics only because I can't stand LA.

This was to be expected, everyone knows about this rivalry and most want to see it. I expect there to be some bitter fans from other teams who root against Boston or LA just because they beat their team but that's how it goes.

Just the way Stern wanted it.

No joke. This is David Stern's dream Finals come true, especially one year after the ref scandal.

Now, if they can only fix that NY franchise...

Just like a Dallas/Pittsburg Super Bowl.

and i guess you forget nors, after spewing all your crap, that the ratings for the playoffs have been WAY up as a whole, not just the finals. the spurs three series were among the highest rated series besides the finals so i think no matter what the finals would have been higher than last year.
