Cowboys likely to restructure Romo deal to create cap room

Posted by Darin Gantt on January 23, 2015, 8:21 AM EST

With numerous big free agent decisions in front of them, the Cowboys are going to need all the cap room they can muster.

So they’re likely to fiddle with the numbers in quarterback Tony Romo’s contract to muster a bit more.

Via Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys are expected to do a simple restructure of Romo’s deal for a second consecutive year, converting most of his $17 million base salary into a bonus to prorate the cap hit over the remaining years of the deal.

“We all realize that anything you push forward that if you don’t use it it’ll cost you cap space that you could use for other players,” owner Jerry Jones said. “On an older player, the farther you put it out in the future the less likely you are to use it. That’s the point. That is the trick.

“On the other hand, the effort is to right now put together the best value we can using those dollars and that’s the art of the deal. I will tell you when I look at Tony I certainly do see four or five more years, so nothing scares me four or five years out.”

While that will eventually make the cap hit gigantic, and a severe burden for them in the latter years of the deal, Jones said his priority was to keep a good cast of players around Romo now.

“This was carefully thought out when we made our agreement with Tony,” Jones said. “We knew that as we moved along there will be reallocation is the best way to say it with his salary, moving it around so that at a given time we could put the best group together with his supporting cast.”

The can-kicking is fine, for now, as long as Romo stays healthy and the Cowboys continue to win. When those things stop happening, they’re going to have to go through another set of cap limitations, which could be tougher than the ones the league imposed on them in 2012.

This team direction was made two seasons ago...and health permitting on Tony Romo, should still prove out as wisdom.

Its certainly interesting to compare and contrast the comments of the Elder Jones with the Younger.

Seems to have taken Jerry a long time to realize this:

A very fundamental reality about the cap that appears to have escaped a lot of fans.

We'll see what happens, but we will know if this organization is taking a new direction by what they do this offseason. If they take the "all in" approach and restructure a ton of contracts and sign big-name free agents, then we'll know that not much has changed.

I think they should restructure only about half of Romo's contract.

You still get $8M in cap space but only move forward $2M per year over the last 4 years of his deal. This flattens out Romo's salary cap at around $18M-$20M until the end of his contract.

You still get lots of cap space for this year, but you are not moving nearly as much money into forward years.

Going to have to do this if Romo is apart of our long term plans 3-4 years... if he's not, they won't push much money into the future

Not sure where the break point is but I like the idea. There will be dead money at the end for sure. I wonder how long the guy can play. I've said 38 but he may be able to play to 40 with his game.

I still think JJ plans to go for broke this off-season. He knows the window is now with Romo and finding the next great QB is very hard. Can't think about 3 or 4 years from now.

Yup. I foresee that too.

In a few years we'll be complaining about cap hits, and dead money, but hopefully we'll be talking about the championships it won us.

This was to be expected to be quite honest. I think most people had to figure they would do this kind of thing.

He has to do the restructure. We need money. We need money to resign all of our own immediately. You can't hit a snag and let some of these guys head into free agency.

After cleaning up the salary cap mess the last few years it's hard to see Garrett and the rest of the FO going along with this.

I agree but at the end of the day it's JJ's team. I'm sure Parcells didn't want TO. I hope they continue to what they've done, but JJ knows the clock is ticking.

If Romo was true leader he'd basically do it for free so we can sign everyone we need to.

Actually, I CAN see everyone ending up on board with this. Why? This is what I love about sites like Over the Cap.com. Even if their figures are slightly off (and, I can never recall them being more than a couple $100K off), the fact that they can restructure both Tony & Tyron, resign Dez and Demarco, sign other FA's and their rookies, and STILL be more than $10M under the cap for 2016 is great. You've pretty much got the "Big contract guys" all under manageable deals for the foreseeable future and they STILL have cap room to do damage.......if they choose to do so.

I love this new Jerry.. he's making and saying all the right moves. He knows it's time to turn this franchise around. Not firing garrett and keeping this cohesive coaching staff together is a huge deal. Lets players know the coaches are to be respected. . Good old fashion football. Love it.

I don't mind Jerry making some big splashes but not if it ruins our future. If we aren't able to resign guys like Frederick and Martin after their rookie deals because we went "all in" it will be a mistake.

Water is wet.

The window is now and not later. Romo is the eye of the storm. When he goes, having a good team will require finding a replacement.

The future is now. Get it done.
