Need a good bar on Bourbon Street to watch the Cowboys

Sounds good. I'll take restaurant recs too. I want some good thin and crispy catfish, the best jambalaya, best BBQ shrimp, a solid po boy, etc.

And I'm just looking for dives. No white tablecloths, no tourist traps. Just the good stuff.

A couple of my favorites are Cafe Maspero on the corner of Decatur and Toulouse just across the street from Jackson Brewery Mall. Great lunch place, but only takes cash.

Another good spot is the Gumbo Shop on St. Peter just a half block down from Jackson Square. Nice relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices and a good selection.

If you want another great choice try Coop's Place, a hole in the wall down Decatur by the French Market near Ursulines Avenue. This is a local hangout which is a bar that serves food. Many people that work in the Quarter come in there after work.

Decatur is just three very shoort blocks over from Bourbon and all of these places are within easy walking distance.

Another place to the other side of Bourbon is Deanie's Seafood on Iberville just a half block or so off Bourbon. It isn't as good as the location in Bucktown, but I have still had great HUGE meals there.

I'm so glad you mentioned Maspero! I try to think of the name of this place every time someone mentions NO.

My girlfriend used to take me there regularly. Always a line, huge sandwiches, cheap price. Tujague's, about a block down from there was a fav too.

Absolutely on Deanie's! We lived off Clearview across from the Mall so Deanie's Bucktown was a once a month stop at least.

BBQ shrimp is one of the top 3 best things I've ever eaten.

My son is student-athlete at UNO and we usually take him to Deanie's Bucktown when we go down to see his meets, which reminds me of another good possibility ... Acme Oyster House. We always go to the one Veterans, but there is one on Iberville between Bourbon and Royal. Both their raw and chargrilled oysters are great, but the chargrilled are amazing!

Oh, agree on the BBQ shrimp. I had some today for lunch.

Gumbo Shop also has great BBQ Shrimp.

You're cracking me up. No joke, I've been researching this for weeks and those are the restaurants I was planning on. I've even planned out my meal at each:

Coop's Place - Cajun Fried Chicken
Cafe Maspero - Fried Seafood Platter
Gumbo Shop - Jambalaya
French Quarter Deli and Grocery - Meat pies

I looked at Deanie's but hadn't decided on it yet. The other ones I was considering are Mother's, Coffee Pot for breakfast, Fiorella's, and Jonny's Po Boys.

Which is the best place for barbecue shrimp?

I've personally never had bbq shrimp at Gumbo Shop, but I've eaten there a lot.

Deanie's are so good, I never found the need to try them any other place and I've never ordered anything else.

Just an FYI, Maspero's is known for their roast beef po-boy's, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better fried seafood platter than guess where.... Deanie's. :laugh2:

Agreed. Po Boys at Maspero's and seafood platter at Deannie's. You can get the BBQ Shrimp as an appetizer and go for the platter as a main dish.

Get a cab. Have him take you uptown to Jacque-Imo's.

You WILL have a long wait. Don't worry about that.

Order the Alligator Sausage Cheesecake and/or fried green tomatoes as an appetizer.

Get whatever you want as an entree, but I recommend one of the following: The Carpetbagger Steak, A stuffed porkchop, or Fried Green Tomatoes Meets Godzilla (softshell crab).

Trust me.

Need...to....stop...getting....very....hungry.........

Damn you.
