My mom's step dad recently fell and split his skull open, that's following 2 strokes. He's currently in a retirement home after being released from the hospital but they'll kick him out to fend for him self (which he can't) again within 20 days

I'm not going to sit here and say this is a good guy he had drinking problems and a lot of other problem all through his life in large part to being a 30 year Vet of amongst other things Vietnam

I'm not going to speculate about his insurance situation but his hospital stay seemed to be no problem.

What i need to know is if there like any veterans retirement homes that would take him? and How do i go about finding these?

He might not have been the greatest person in the world but he did give 30 years of his life to his country, that has to count for more then 20 days and a "good bye and good luck" to a person who's no longer capable of taking care of him self...

This is a really difficult situation for us since his family is really just 3 people at this point. My mom, my uncle and me, and we're all in Norway while he's in El Paso. i know there's a lot of Vets on these forums so any advice would be appreciated

I don't know of anything specific but make sure you check out the retirement home thoroughly.

Many of the private homes are tombs designed to create as much money as possible.

I'd be asking how many residents they have per staff member, how many are licensed and on duty a tall hours of the night.

The retirement home business is really in bad shape right now. People just look for quick cash at the expense of lives and that's not an exaggeration.

There are individuals now who buy homes, retrofit them into basically college dorms and rent out the rooms. In some states, the only requirements is like a $100 licensing fee. They charge ridiculous amounts and don't even have people on hand 24 hours a day.

What city are talking about? Nevermind.....your across the world.

My ex-roommate/best friend was a Vietnam vet. Almost 3 yrs ago he retired early @ 60 years of age. A few months after retiring, he was diagnosed with lung & bone cancer.

He learned about the federal government paying for ex-vets that display any symptoms from Agent Orange (a defoliant they used in Vietnam) and chemicals/weapons used over there in Vietnam.

He gets a nice monthly retirement from working for the railroad for 35+ years. Now my buddy gets an extra $4K+/month & he got a nice one time settlement check from the federal government.

Since your relative does not have much family to fend for him, he should be able to get extra help from government agencies such as the Veterans Admininstration. I suggest contacting the VA in Washington. If they dont want to give much help, hire a lawyer to represent him to get all he can qualify to receive.

JMHO.

There is a huge Veterans hospital here in Tucson. I am sure they could help him. They have all kinds of programs there.

Is this in Texas? A lot of times the nursing homes can't kick them out when they say they can. I know some legal aid, elderly law attorneys in Austin. I can get you some info and I know if your step dad submits an appeal to the nursing home, they get an automatic, 90 day stay. I'm not sure what the details are, but I may be able to point you towards some resources.

I'd start with a simple phone call here: http://www.tlsc.org/index.asp

It can't hurt to call.
