Need at safety

Because I saw more from Wilcox to suggest he gets it more than Webb. Wilcox had injury issues but was very good in the first Philadelphia game. He needs a lot of refinement.

Webb was tentative whenever he got on the field and his role was not that great that it should have been overwhelming but it was. When we signed Sterling Moore back, we got a little better. Not really even because Moore has better physical skills but he has a better mentality. Webb looks soft and played that way.

I am not suggesting Wilcox is a world beater.

I just think getting that extra slot/versatile DB who could do multiple roles between CB/S is more valuable than just drafting Wilcox's replacement to pair with Church. I can say based off last season, Wilcox has a better chance to develop into a player than Webb who looked like he did not want to play hard at times.

A large part of team building is getting players to know their jobs, even if it is very specific, and do it very well.

I'm not disagreeing on a versatile s/cb being very useful for our team, I'm a big fan of Exum in the later rounds. But I disagree on Wilcox showing much, if anything, as a coverage FS. He looked lost and was out of position a ton. He showed his athleticism and ability to chase and tackle well, but I saw nothing to say that he should be the starting FS. If we had a safety already that I felt comfortable with in coverage I would have no problem with Wilcox starting, but Church sure ain't that guy.

Haha, Ward, and Brooks are the only guys I see as being viable day 1 FS's though so this conversation is probably pointless anyway.

I should have qualified, that they won't be drafting any in the first 3 rounds. :D
They brought in Ward and Joyner for visits. They only get to bring in 30 players.

I think last year about 5 of 7 draft picks had been in for visits.

No, what I'm asking you is why do you have 2 completely different views on 2 small school DB's who both struggled their rookie years? You're saying Webb needs to be replaced and can't play, but Wilcox should start. It makes no sense.
I watched the coverage drills when Webb and Wilcox were at the Senior Bowl practices. They were going against the same WRs and Wilcox was better covering them in the 1 on 1 drills than Webb. Wilcox, a big safety, was better than some other the other CBs also.

Wilcox was good in training camp and preseason games. Webb was not.

That's all well and good....except that his job the majority of the time is going to be playing a single high safety and not 1 on 1 coverage. Wilcox was lost playing in space last year and was late in coverage more than a few times.

Yes, I watched the games. My point was that he has shown a lot more than Webb.

It was a bad situation to have a rookie 3rd round pick starting when the surrounding veterans were just learning a new defense also and the DL and later LB situation was a mess.

I would feel better about his chance of success in 2014 if he were going to be surrounded by a stable core of veterans that all had significant time in the scheme. As it is, I give him a 50-50 chance of being good in 2014.

I think Ward might be a player that the Cowboys are targeting but it looks doubtful for him to be there at 47.

Broaddus mentioned a new safety prospect I haven't heard yet before(I haven't followed safety's much this draft season) on the Draft Show today. Jemea Thomas from Georgia Tech. He said, he was a mid to late round safety to "keep an eye on";). To me he made it sound like he was a player the Cowboys are interested in and could be more of a free safety.

Could they draft a safety in either rounds 2 or 3? Yeah, it is possible certainly. If a safety is there that represents very good value– they have to pull the trigger.

But if they have a safety rated in the same area as say a DT, DE, OG, OT or maybe even a WR or LB... Then I'm taking one of those.

The whispers in the local media are that they really like Ward.

Who are you and what have you done with the usual Alexander?

We brought in Ward for a visit, he'll go before Round 3, I think if he's there at #47 the "we have a safety" quote will be questioned seriously by the front office, certainly if DL is addressed with the first choice..

You could have a point if they're pleased with how the 1st went. Certainly easier to pull the trigger on a safety if they've secured a prime DL in round 1 and don't feel the pressure to have to get a DL in round 2.

Jamea Thomas is another CB/S mutt.

Not very polished though. The 7th round version of what we would be getting out of Ward/Joyner.

i think they will draft ward if hes there at 47, but i doubt he will be
