Need help building a gaming pc

Would love the best quality and the ability to turn up the texture, but don't know if that's possible for my budget

I built (upgraded) my last one for about $550, but I already had my hard drives, video card, and case.

I only bought the motherboard, CPU, memory, and a new power supply. (power supply because the last one died)

Oh and before I get in to picking out stuff, do you have any brand allegiances?

Do you care about overclocking at all?

Ha! I would just keep it simple and pick out the best PC you can at $900. I would go from the ground up too. Don't rely on any hardware he already has besides mouse, keyboard, and monitor. He already noted they are pretty old. :)

Yep, doing this now :)

What's the monitor size for this rig? The video card that can whizzbang a 19 inch 1440x900 monitor might suffer on a 26 inch 1900x1200 one.

I would have used a Wishlist but it appears you can't add combo deals to them.

This price doesn't include shipping or the rebates you get. All items are free shipping except the motherboard.

Hah yeah, I assume you have a drive you can use though, Don? If not, there is money to play with to grab something.

$800 - $900?

Buy a XBOX 360 for $250, and a cheap desktop for web/email/pictures/etc, around $350. Then save the remaining $300 to buy an XBOX 720 next Black Friday.

A console is a redheaded step child to a real gaming rig.

Unless he plans on installing a 64 bit OS 8 gig of ram is a waste

8GB is the sweet spot right now. It pretty much allows for a lot of multi-tasking and future proofs his system (As much as you can reasonably future proof, that is..). I think that's something he wanted, which is why I included a board with a second PCI-E slot, too.

Now and a few years down the road, but would like 2 be able upgrade as the year go by

If 8 becomes too little, slap in another 8 gigs. Plus, 8GB in this build accounted for only $40. I'll assume if he's not already on a 64bit OS that he'll be upgrading to one. If he's hellbent on sticking to a 32bit Windows (Vista/7) He could always install a PAE patch.

EDIT: Just checked and the prices for 2x2 on the same brand of RAM is 29.99. Well worth it to spend the extra $10 and get 8 now.

I think installing a 32bit OS today is a waste. 64bit is the standard now. Though if he doesn't already have a 64bit OS (Windows), that wasn't included in the price.

There goes his budget

The reason why you want to buy as much memory as you can now, is the prices are pretty much as low as they're going to get.

What's going to happen if you wait forever to throw in another 4GB stick down the road?

Take a look at DDR/DDR2 Ram prices.

GASP! DDR2? What is wrong with you! DDR3 baby! :laugh2:

Well what I mean is, as tech advances, older tech becomes a bit more scarce and consequentially the price goes up.
