...and possibly preventing a crime. Seriously.

I have a not-so-bright relative that I am trying to keep out of trouble. I need to figure out how to temporarily disable the use of his van so that he can't drive it.

It needs to be something relatively easy to get to but very hard for him to diagnose. I need to disable it for maybe a week or more, so it needs to be something that he, or one of his other mechanic friends simply cannot figure out. Maybe something like changing the amperage of a fuse or something like that. I think I want to disable, or disconnect something in two different locations so if one is figured out and that still doesn't solve the problem that it delays them figuring out what to problem is.

It needs to be something where if they do figure it out they can't determine that it was sabotaged, that perhaps something just came loose.

I need your sneakiest most outlandish ideas on how to keep this vehicle from being driven for a week or two.

It's for his own good.

Hide the keys.
I cant get the keys without him knowing it's me and I have reason to believe that one of his acquaintances has made a copy of his key and is intending to commit a crime in his vehicle and insure that my relative takes the fall for it. It's complicated. :(

if it's complicated and something he plans on doing, if the van doesn't work he can go rent one.

i'd address the problem, not try to make parts of it go away. tell him you will do whatever you can legally do to ensure he can't go through with what he's planning and alert the relatives of what he's trying to set up.

making the van not work i'm not sure i'd put the the "effective" category.

If my relatives friend rents a van then the crime can be linked to him. But if he steals my relatives van, then the crime is linked to my family member. The person I believe has a copy of the key to the van is a hardened criminal.

I have reason to believe that this person is going to attempt to make sure my family member takes the fall for a crime and I'm just trying to outsmart them by neither one of them being able to use the van.

Talk to the folks at crimestoppers.

Step 1: Don't commit a crime to prevent a crime.

You don't want to end up a felon by accidentally doing more than $1,000 in property damage and being caught.

remove the fuse to the computer, disable the clutch, siphon the gas out of the tank, disconnect the fuel pump,if an auto you can take the shift cable off and it wont get into gear, pop the distributor cap and replace the coil wire with a plug wire it looks the same and noone would figure it out,Maybe install a fuel pump cutoff switch and have it hidden, disable the spark plug, remove a battery wire. thats about all the non obvious ones i can think of.

now if you want to make it unstealable/drivable pour bleach in the tank it will ruin the engine. you could steal the tires and put the car on blocks. you could lock the stearing wheel then take it.you could drain the oil/transmission fluid/power steering fluid/coolent. thats all i got

Crawl under the van and take the drive shaft, it's just four easy nuts and bolts on each end, then hide it in his garage, or his attic.

You can take the starter out of the van. It is usually secured by a few easy to remove bolts and a cable.

not that i would do it but water in a fuel tank is not the first thing people look for and then when found its not totally impossible to fix.

Call the cops. There'll be a record of what you contend and if anything happens, your relatives friend is in the cops awareness.

Just call the cops man. Do it anonymously or something.

yea, like i said earlier, there are better ways to stop him than trying to be sneaky about it. it sounds like you don't want to confront him but your choices are rather limited.

run a covert op trying to stop him, or just tell him you'll go to the police if he even thinks about it again.

LoL. It doesn't seem like there's much you can do talk to them tell them what's the deal. If he don't want to hear you out then oh well. No point in doing something if the person isn't going to hear you out. How'd the other guy get a copy of his car keyS?
