Use a drill to screw/unscrew a screw in two or three of his tires. Use a long screw and do it roughly enough that it will actually flatten to the point that he cannot simply refill the tires. At least two would mean that he can't switch to a spare and would have to actually take the tires off/go somewhere to get them fixed. Cost to fix would only be about ten bucks per tire.

...and possibly preventing a crime. Seriously.

I have a not-so-bright relative that I am trying to keep out of trouble. I need to figure out how to temporarily disable the use of his van so that he can't drive it.

It needs to be something relatively easy to get to but very hard for him to diagnose. I need to disable it for maybe a week or more, so it needs to be something that he, or one of his other mechanic friends simply cannot figure out. Maybe something like changing the amperage of a fuse or something like that. I think I want to disable, or disconnect something in two different locations so if one is figured out and that still doesn't solve the problem that it delays them figuring out what to problem is.

It needs to be something where if they do figure it out they can't determine that it was sabotaged, that perhaps something just came loose.

I need your sneakiest most outlandish ideas on how to keep this vehicle from being driven for a week or two.

It's for his own good.

Man, I lead a boring life. :laugh2:

Not really, I am quite content, .. I just can't imagine being part of something like this.

I wanna know what tipped you off to an impending crime and what crime might happen.

See mud over the license plate?

Do they seemingly always fold up large spreads of paper whenever you come around?

Have they begun talking to each other in foreign voices and calling each other "Stevie"? This one is a big tip off.

His cousin started insisting on being called "Mr. Pink."

I don't know what kind of van he has. That could make a difference.

Here's an easy one, have someone call him anonymously and tell him they know someone put sugar in his gas tank.

If you really need to disable the van, re-arrange the spark plug wires. By them firing out of order it won't run well if at all. That way nothing is stolen.

Or you can remove the rotor from the distributor. Usually 2 clips for the distributor cap and the rotor comes right off in your hand with a slight tug. Put the cap back on.

Sorry Bob, I didn't catch what you meant. Kinda tired, but can't sleep. Going on 2 days without it.

I have really bad insomnia sometimes. I don't sleep much anyway. 4 or 5 hours a day is all I can handle unless I am sick. I go 2 or 3 hours of sleep on a very regular basis. It gets bad when I hit stretches of 5 or 6 days of no sleep. Not there yet thankfully.

I know so many practical jokes with cars. Popcorn on the air cleaner. Engine gets hot and the popcorn starts to pop and comes out everywhere. It is much better to use a lot of it. The bag kind not the microwave kind.

Flour in the air vents. Blow the excess away with a straw to hide the evidence. Turn the vent on high. Start the car and instant white cloud.

I have one friend who I got really bad one time. He has a white truck. We made a stencil and painted his tailgate with clear fluorescent paint. It could not be seen with the naked eye. At night when headlights hit it though people could read it. It took 2 weeks before someone told him.

Yes, I did repaint the tailgate for him.

Why is your relative connected with this guy in the first place?

I agree with those who say call the cops. If you know something and it's obvious you do, you should report it.

I don't know how you do it Hos. I can stay up fine but I can't function if I do. I long for my bed if I stay up all night. My wife is like you. She can stay up all night and not be affected by it at all. Of course when she finally does go to sleep, she wakes the neighbors up with gut wrenching night terrors. If someone ever comes in our bedroom swinging an axe and she starts screaming, it is over with because I won't move. I will just tell her to calm down without opening my eyes thinking she is having another night terror.

Call his Momma and/or his Grandmamma. Call the aunts in and break out the heavy guns on him. If this don't fix it, it can't be fixed and so you would just do well to leave it alone and stay clear.

Seriously, this is best last chance if what you describe is the case.

This is a very exciting thread!

Let us know how things shake out.

We've had some pretty interesting threads in the off-topic zone in the past, and then the thread-starter never comes back to tell everyone what happened.

I was tempted at one point to go through and dig up a couple of them to see how things turned out, but have never gotten around to it.

I cannot believe no one credited you with this excellent reference. "We're not gonna fall for the banana-in-the-tailpipe." Well played.
