Needs for next year

This year's not over yet and I'm not throwing in the towel on the playoffs, but we've got a lot of holes to fill and/or question marks heading into the off season.

On Defense:

- A free safety (otherwise our secondary can be top notch)
- An inside linebacker (Shanle and Fowler won't cut it)
- An outside linebacker (Don't know anything about Burnett, Fujita's a disappointment)
- A NT (Ferguson will be back and he's a big disappointment)

On Offense:

- A WR (Key and Glenn aren't productive enough now, it won't get any better)
- 2 OL (not sure about Flozell returning, either. Maybe three)
- RB (Barber's a complement, can't be sure about Julius anymore)
- FB (If we want to use one of those)

When you throw in a kicker, and maybe a QB for a year or two down the road... that's a lot of needs (11), more than we can fill in one off season's draft and free agency.

We should be further along than this in year three of our new coach/GM.

Were our needs greater when he took over? I'm not so sure.

Defense:
FS - Draft or FA / See Berry-O
ILB - See Burnett next year
OLB - See Kalen Thornton / FA pick up
NT - See Pepper Johnson

Offense:
Wr- FA
2 OL - See Columbo and draft plus FLo
Rb- Not going to happen
Fb - Crossing fingers for Beasley
K - ?

The Running back situation will be fixed with the Offensive Line. After that, I'm not even sure we'd have to worry about the fullback. I would get a new QB in the draft, Jay Cutler?, so we can finally catch up with all the other teams that dont have old players coming in every year.

Does it really matter who's at fullback?

Keep in mind that in this day and age in the NFL, you're not going to have stars at every position. Keith Davis was doing just fine before the injuries in our secondary. At that point we didn't NEED a top end FS. I suspect he'll stick around as a starter, and we'll pick up a linebacker and maybe a WR in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Mostly, I suspect they'll focus their efforts on fixing the OL. It's by far our team's biggest problem. I personally hope they fish or cut bait with our young (but getting older) backup QBs. We should have someone grooming to replace Bledsoe NOW. Next season is an an absolute must. I get the feeling no one in the Dallas organization thinks Romo or Hensen can do it.

FS- Low level guy like Alexander from NYFG
ILB-Burnett/Draft pick
OLB-Burnett/Draft pick
NT-Pepper would have to develop fast/Late rounder draft pick
WR-Mid round pick
OL-1 high draft pick/1 late round pick/ 1 starting caliber free agent
RB-none at all we are set here for at least another year
FB-Beasley could be someone who opens up our offense even more with his blocking & receiving
K-Big time FA, whether it be Vanderjagt or Viniteri we will sign one.

Condsidering BP's ability to draft good Defensive players we probably will end up drafting more on the first day than second. Offensively we will draft one guy one the first day IMO, Besides Oline, we really arent that many players from a SB. This isnt the 90's anymore you must develop players and sign guys who will produce (Glover & Henry) and Get rid of those who dont (VT, QC, T-Ham, Eddie George...Rivera...Singleton). We need 1 person who is a superstar, whether it be TO or a bigtime OT we need someone who can put a face on this offense and carry when need be.

Aside from our Defense not showing up, havent you noticed that our current O-Line is the biggest problem.

Adams going down is WAY worse than most of you thought. To those of you who said we were better off without him, just watch Tucker get manhandled by Daniels.

Allen is over the hill.

Stud OT or NT in One
Trade Glover/Ellis for picks

Speed WR
Posession TE - (Next Heath Miller)
ILB and FS next....

2 guards, a center, 2 solid all purpose Oline back ups. Maybe get a replacement for LA. too. A speedy receiver to compliment Key and Crayton.

Thats about all we need on Offense. A FS and maybe a LB pick up in FA. Were not that far away from being solidly good.

Two words for your playmaker...
Reggie Wayne.
I don't see him sticking around because they can't afford him. I live in Indy and have season tickets to the Colts. This guy is amazing after the catch and i hope we can get him really bad. I don't want TO.

why does everyone mention us needing running backs? i can plainly see a defender in the backfield before the backs even get the ball on about every play. how are you supposed to even get started running with someone in your face before you get the ball? fix the offensive line and we are deep in the playoffs next year, possibly superbowl. count on it!!

Jerald Sowell will be released by the Jets.

You can all but punch his ticket to Dallas.

Trade Ellis/Glover you can get a 2 and 3 for these players.

Draft 2 Tackles and guard.

Draft a Biadasz OLB and a strong/big ILB.

Draft WR mid round .

Draft a huge/strong DT, something like 320 lbs.

Draft Future QB in late rounds, or if one good one falls to you, snatch him up
and run fast.

FA

WR/FS/Kicker/C/maybe a cheap guard.

Ware gains 12 pounds and gets stronger.
Burnett gains7 pounds gets stronger.
Canty gains 5 pounds gets stronger.
Spears gets stronger
Roy loses 13 pounds.
Beriault gains 13 pounds prepare for FS challenge.
Henry gets healthy.
Lose Henson or Romo
Both guards are challenged by rookies and FA
RT is up for grabs.
AJohnson gains 10 pds muscle/gets alot stronger
LA loses 20 pds.
Rivera gets completely healthy.
Tucker gets benched
Julius Jones loses 9 pounds and works on his leg strength and quickness.
Barber studies hard.
Tyson Thompson works on his Kick Offs
Cundiff get's released
Keyshawn fights for starting role with FA WR .

Coaching changes
New OLINE coach.
BP gets his head out of his ***.
2006/ competing for SB

I agree with you on FS. I don't think its a pivotal position in the defense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Beriault, Davis and Pile fight it out. Might see a mid level FA like Hope from Pittsburgh or a later round draft choice. I'd choke if Dallas drafted a FS in 1 or 2.

I'd say OL, LB (ILB/OLB), WR, DT/NT should be the priorities.

And, surprisingly, I agree with Nors. A TE somewhere wouldn't surprise me in the least. Campbell is aging and a FA next year. For all of his supposed run blocking prowess, he hasn't done much this year. Need a second TE besides Witten.

Interesting list. I like it but I think the challenge here is exactly what positions on the O-Line you are going to tweak. Both the Guard and Tackle positions are in question, and our Centers have drawn fire as well. Looking a today's crew you have to ask..."what do I do now?"

Normally the Cowboys do not pick OL in the first round but we might see a change this year. It is going the interesting around draft time to see what we do. Today, I believe we continue with that approach and pick another LB immediate contributor in the first round. The OL pick comes in the second round.

I'm no draft expert so after that I have no clue. OK, before that I had no clue as well.
