ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers closer Neftali Feliz was named the 2010 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner on Monday, becoming only the team's second player to win the honor given annually by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Feliz, 22, received 20 out of 28 first-place votes, 7 second-place votes, and one third-place vote for a total 122 points on a 5-3-1 scoring system. He joined Detroit Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson -- a Denton Ryan High School product -- as the only players named on all 28 ballots.

First baseman Mike Hargrove had been the Rangers' only rookie recipient, winning the award in 1974. Feliz began the 2010 season as a late-inning setup man for closer Frank Francisco. But after a rough first week of the season for Francisco, the Rangers flipped roles, moving Feliz into the closer's role. He flourished, finishing with a rookie-record 40 saves, bettering the record of 37 set by Seattle's Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2000. He had the seventh-lowest WHIP (0.880) among pitchers with at least 50 innings and was third among AL relievers with a .176 opponent batting average. Feliz, who finished with a 4.73 ERA in 70 appearances, also led the AL by closing out 59 games.

Feliz lit up radar guns throughout the majors, regularly hitting triple-digits with his fastball. As the season progressed, he became more effective as his secondary pitches improved. He had a 1.42 ERA in the second half of the season and a .148 opponent batting average, tops among AL pitchers after the All-Star break. He didn't allow a run in his final 16 regular-season games after Aug. 22.

MVP for sure. MOY, probably. Gardenhire might win it. It will help Washington that the playoffs aren't included because he made a number of questionable decisions in the playoffs. Vlad won the players' Comeback of the Year award, so he'll probably win the BBWAA too. That's a pretty impressive haul.

I think Washington may be more of a lock for MOY than Josh is for MVP considering all the time Josh missed due to injury. I think there is a pretty good chance both will win though.

The thing Hamilton has going for him is they had the division wrapped up when he got hurt. He had been so good they had a 10 game lead. He's the MVP for sure and Cano is the only one with even a case against him. IMO.

I don't know if you can say he was so good they had a 10 game lead when the reality is that other than June they were barely over a .500 team, and they had to be thankful that the Angels and A's never got their stuff together.

I'm a huge Ranger fan and actually went to see a couple of playoff games and one WS game, so I'm not saying this out of having anything against the Rangers or Hamilton, but the reality is that while the Rangers did what they needed to do to maintain their lead, the Angels and A's never really put up a very strong fight.

Still, I agree that Hamilton is likely to win because he was the key cog in the Rangers surprising AL West win, but my worry is that some idiot voters who don't know better will look and see that he is little down on the HR and RBI lists and he could lose votes. The BA should offset that anyway, but who knows how some will vote.

My predictions:

AL MOY: Washington
NL MOY: Bud Black (SD)
AL Cy Young: Felix Hernandez
AL MVP: Hamilton
NL MVP: Joey Votto

Don't think any of those are earth shattering.
