I love the Eagles. Almost every member has had a successful solo career. It's really surprising that they were able to keep the band together as long as they did, with all the artistic differences inherent in what is essentially a "super group".
Yep, Frey and Henley were known to feud and both were good songwriters.
I am a huge James Gang and Joe Walsh fan and when he joined them, I thought that wouldn't work but it really did.
Quick Eagles story. My radio station in Boise was the official station because of my independent rep's relationship with their manager and he knew what a big fan I was of Joe's and arranged for my wife and I to have dinner with him before the "Hell Freeze's Over" show but his rep called and said he was not feeling well and couldn't make it, I was really disappointed as I was looking forward to impressing him with my discography knowledge of his albums and my favorites were usually the non hits.
We got to the show and I'm thinking 'I wonder if he's really ill or just didn't want to make it'? Made the mistake of sharing that with my wife and she got to use her "Mr. Skeptic" on me that she was famous for using. She borrows my Program Director's binoculars and looks at the stage during the first song, we had great seats and were close, and hands them to me without saying anything.
Joe Walsh was leaning up against this makeshift wall right behind him and looked like he would collapse any minute. He was pale, even for Joe, and looking bad. I looked closer and that wall was put there for him to lean back on. I felt bad for being a skeptic and was thankful my wife didn't seize that opportunity but she knew he was one of my all time favorites and still is.
The next morning, a courier arrived with two boxes, one addressed to me and one to my wife with a handwritten note from Joe saying please accept these gifts and sorry he couldn't make it. Two of the top of the line Hell Freezes Over tour jackets. I still have both of them and my wife's hangs next to mine giving her one more time to remind me not to be such a skeptic.
