If it ain't broke, break itFixing what wasn't broke.

Give it time. It will take players and coaches some time to get used to this and draw up strategies to get some bigger returns. Curious to see how it progresses as the preseason and season goes along. Kickoffs before now were almost pointless as most went out the endzone for touchbacks. The return aspect of kickoffs were becoming non-existent league wide. NFL is usually good at recognizing areas to improve or change. Now, they don't always execute these changes successfully.Well it's good practice for them and I realize it's just preseason but dude that looked boring it looked like a short kick into an area and then everything looks like a scrum and there was no openings for big runs at least from my perspective but maybe it is because most of the backups are playing... Seems to me why would you give them a chance to run the ball back anyway I mean if this is gonna be a dangerous play that the the people receiving the ball could end up taking it back for big yardage why not just kick the touchback I mean aren't you still allowed to Kick It Out of the back of the end zone because our kicker can Kick It Out of the back of the end zone like 90% of the time... I'd rather put the ball on the 30 everyone acts like that's a big deal but looking at last night I'd rather kick it short and then hardly they even got back to the 25 but if this is supposed to be like fun and exciting it didn't look like it to me//
completely wrong.the kickoff was useless before,it was a time to take a bathroom break for most as it was a touchback almost always.this atleast gives us some FOOTBALL action, cant believe people are complaining about this too.Fixing what wasn't broke.
kicking it out of the end zone vs forcing a return is the pussification of the league??Just another pussification of the league. It's not even football anymore. Just greedy *******s getting checks.
I’m assuming it’s a penalty if someone moves before the ball is fielded. If yes I hope the Cowboys don’t lead the league in violating this rule. The nfl isn't going to bring back the original because of injuries. So it's either this or just remove it completely.
I don't have an issue with this way except for the not moving until it's caught. I wonder how consistent the refs will be on that.
It was last night. Kickoffs did look very weird. Going to take getting use to.I thought the Hall of Fame game was this weekend. When did they start playing the game on Friday morning? I wouldn’t have watched it anyway.
I would have watched at least some of it had I known it was last night. I just checked the box score, strange Caleb Williams didn’t play. You would think they would like to give him as many snaps as possible, seeing they’ve already named him the starter. Teams have become very protective of their starters in preseason, even rookie starters. It was last night. Kickoffs did look very weird. Going to take getting use to.

Lol the league is run by fools. Just go back to the old Kick off or put the ball on the 25.The new kickoff rule was in action today during the Texans Bears game in Canton (that finished in the 3rd quarter due to weather issues). Frankly, it looked terrible. It looks like a convoluted mess. For those who didn't see the game, here's my way of understanding the new rule.
So, apparently, the kicker kicks from the usual spot, while the rest of the kicking team lines up at the opposing 40 and can't move until the ball is fielded. If a team needs to hold the kickoff, then a 12 player can be brought on to hold (but must vacate the field immediately upon the ball being kicked). The ball must then land between the 20 and the goal line. If it's in the end zone, apparently, the ball is placed at the 30. Oh, and you can't kick an onside kick until the 4th, and you must be losing and must announce that you're going to kick it.
The onside kick rule is stupid. Tbf, it's usually obvious when you're going to do it, but I liked when Pat McAfee would look for the gap in the coverage and kick a suicide onside kick where he would run the 10 yards and fall on the ball when there was a gap and the receiving team didn't notice. Clever way to get the ball back. Additionally, recovering an onside kick is difficult as it is. This may make the odds even lower. Why not add a 4th and 12 option? That way, the team behind has a choice as to how they want to try to get the ball back.
All in all, I thought the first use of the kickoff rule looked stupid.

4th and 12 is too short. It has to be more difficult to mirror the almost impossible odds of an onside kick. Something like 4th and 25 or higher.
fish didnt like it either, and said it was not exciting at all.The new kickoff rule was in action today during the Texans Bears game in Canton (that finished in the 3rd quarter due to weather issues). read post 55Lol the league is run by fools. Just go back to the old Kick off or put the ball on the 25.
the whole idea is not safety, it is about they want teams to start at the 30 or further for more scoring. Why would you want to kick it out of the endzone to only give the opponent the ball at the 30? That would make the field shorter for them to get into scoring position.
Tinkering owners and the NFL need to eradicate this move and simply bring the original kickoff back. I want to see tackle football, not touch/flag football.
Can’t agree with you on that one my good friend.
A gassed defense who just gave up a score shouldn’t be asked to make a play just to keep possession….especially with all the bogus/questionable flags that are thrown.
I’m just not in favor of making it easier to come back after you got whipped all day, but I understand how the league thinks and they want the opposite for ratings.
Really, the kickoff would probably have already been gone entirely if not for the onside factor.
fish didnt like it either, and said it was not exciting at all.
then he said maybe teams have plans, they dont want to show in PS.
What I didnt like is the rec team was getting almost to the 30 every time, and that will create more scoring possibly, but I didnt like that aspect.
And if it goes into endzone it comes out to the 30, which kinda says the nfl wants offenses to start at the 30 not the 20.
About the onside kicks, I just had a thought. Maybe the nfl does not want onside kicks anymore at all, not for safety reasons
but because they can mess up a carefully fixed game !! Cant have that now can we????????
It's been very broken.Fixing what wasn't broke.
