New kickoff rule makes Turpin more impactful

It seems the more the NFL changes the game the worse it gets. The new kickoff rules are terrible. Go back to the old rules and play the game.

They make changes just to make changes.
If it is not broke don't tamper with it. Or don't do it too much.

They should have let the KO as it was. However, I can see the 35 yard line creating more excitement for returns.
Remember the PAT they lined up at the 2 yard line, so a fake was always in play. Then they moved it back so that removed the surprise element. But made games more interesting if that PAT was missed. As opposed to being made 99.9% of the time.

Now the onside kick surprise is gone. So a team now knows, onside kick, or 2 point conversion.

Just another change it will take time to get used to.
They took the UFL kickoff last year but they couldn't get them to agree to the 35. Then a lot of teams just kicked it into the endzone. Doing the full UFL rules should keep that from happening. This new kickoff had hardly any injuries so they like this to the former which had a lot of injuries.

I dont think they are bipolar on the subject. The goal is to keep kickoffs in the game and at a high rate of return. The issue has been navigating around the injury risk which seemed to be significantly lower from the new kickoff format. They change the rules every year it seems, but the goal has been pretty consistent. As long as injury rates stay down they will continue to push for more action on the field.
^ This. They have had positive results with less injuries on KO since the new ruling. They want exciting football plays, but they have balancing act.

They need to change the onside kick rule to add some drama. The odds of the kicking team recovering an onside kick under the current rule is extremely slim.
Yes. The gutting of the onside kick (to what end?) has been bad for the game.

I don't like this new KO rule, either. Essentially, a touchback results in a penalty - only five yards less than the penalty for putting a KO out of bounds. With the offense immediately in business, and the defense on its heels.

I despise the onside kicking rules
cannot do it before the fourth quarter
can only do it twice
have to WARN THE OTHER TEAM

this ain't football; this is a grandma's knitting club!

Lame IMO.

So, the NFL is basically handing teams over a third of the field for free. lol

Yeah, kickoffs can be dangerous, but so is football. That’s why these guys get paid millions and have top-tier medical care. Kickoff returns used to be electric. Just look at moments like Devin Hester taking one to the house on the opening kick of the Super Bowl. Moments like that are what made the game special.

That's the entire point of this though. In 2023 Brandon Aubrey had a 90% touchback rate on kickoffs. With the new kickoff that came down to 50%. Now the league is trying to go harder to push for more kickoffs. We have to accept that it will look different that it did a few years ago, but the league is doing a nice job IMO of bringing the play back into the game. I think they still need to tweak the current system though and figure out a better solution to onside kicks.

So, we can expect a lot more penalties on our SP? Seems like we get one on most returns.
Probably not, the new kick return set up while allowing for more returns really didn't see a high rate of penalties.

Just 494 special teams penalties overall. Of those just 179 were on a no down play like a kickoff or extra point. That only averages out to be about 1 penalty every other game. I don't have the full breakdown but I would assume a decent number of those are going to be from either extra points, pre snap penalties, or onside attempts. The actual kickoffs seem to be mostly clean penalty wise.

...here's your current NFL status. Your welcome. ;).

Goodell changes something every year he won't leave the game alone, this guy has a major problem. His ego is huge and he thinks he's more important than the game itself.
This is owners proposing a new rule then voting.
If it was Goodall they would be playing flag football on kickoffs with non contact blocking and touchbacks to the 30 if the ball crossed the goal line on the kick!

I honestly hate the new kickoff setup. Put the kickoff team back at their own 30, kick the ball, touch back would be at the 20 again and that's that.
While I am at it, I don't like the new playoff rules either. First score wins and that's that.

None of this ufl 3rd world country style crap. Play the game and live on
Needs to go to the college football style in OT.

The NFL is utterly bipolar on what it wants to do with kick-offs. One year, they don't want returns because it's too dangerous, the next they try to do something to encourage more returns. Make up your mind, already!
Becaue kickoffs, even though theyre dangerous, are also one of the sir exciting plays of the game. Plus this rule change also gives an advantage too the offense and scoring output

I predict Turp will have an expanded role in next season's offense. If there ever was a time for Turp to become a big time star, it'd be now. That's the other thing. We just need one more stud WR and we're set. The team would just be better as far as that position goes.

I expect the Cowboys to go WR, OL, RB heavy in this draft. In no particular order. You get your impact players there, set up for the future, and land key guys to build your team on.

Meanwhile,

Operation Revive Dak Prescott

Like Hurts, Dak just needs a really good team around him.

There's nothing wrong with that.

The rule last year worked like expected except some teams still kicked it in the endzone. They want returns. The rule is designed to encourage returns. They don’t want full speed impacts. The rule worked well. Kickoff returns up, kick off returns for TD up, injuries on kick offs down

KO returns for TD last year was 7 which is up from 2023. Injuries were down. It’s worked for the most part the way they planned it. The only thing is some teams still kicked deep so they addressed that. You probably see even more returned for td this year

What' s going to happen is he'll get it to the 35 yard line or before the 35 yard line, thus resulting in NO better results, only thing is that you'll actually see someone running with the ball instead of taking a knee!
Turpin returned one for TD last year and hes one of the top returners so I love the rule
