Which is why when they're at the top of their game, they should split up.
It's not like it once was, with bands like the Rolling Stones; if a band changes sound, they're accused of selling out. If they don't change, they're accused of being one-trick ponies.
They should go off in different directions, with different musicians and get different input. Maybe they can get back together after a few years and see what the time away and different influences can do for them.
This sounds like the realization that their experiments weren't received well, so they'd best try to recapture that old lightning. Nothing remarkable and would have been easily forgettable on Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets.
