First Joe Gibbs for Washington and nearly Marv Levy for Buffalo, now....

Art Shell has reportedly been hired to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders spent nearly six weeks hunting for a new head coach after Norv Turner was fired on January 3. This will be Shell's second stint with the Raiders. He coached the team from 1988-1994. A press conference to annouce the hiring is scheduled for tomorrow.

Feb. 10 - 11:39 pm et

..........what about Jimmy Johnson for Dallas?

I don't think though that Gibbs or Levy were fired.

Re-hiring a fired coach is much stranger.

its not a new thing. Even when I got into football, you had the Merry-go-round of coaches. That is one reason I thingk I became a cowboys fan. We stuck with Tom Landry through thick and thin, the Dolphins had Shula, the Vikes had Bud Grant and the Skins had that one dude, dead now, cant recall his name sorry to say, thought I would never forget that. But few teams have ever stayed the course with one guy for an extended period. There was a reason the Cowboys, Dolphins, Vikings and skins were perennial contenders back then, they stayed with a guy and his system, he had control of the team. Look at what Johnson did in 5 years and how fast it fell apart after he left.

Edit: Look at Pittsburgh now with Cowher, 10 years at the helm and he finally drove it all the way home. hy, cause every player knows that system and knows what is expectedof him. Troy can gamble cause he knows the guys behind him know hes gunna gamble and are ready to clean up if he makes a mess of it.

I have always perferred a steady long term solution to leadership. Look at San ANtonio in the NBA. Pops 10th year, maybe 11th even now. Look at the Spurs and where they rank in the total league. anygiven week they are 1-2-3, depending on wether the mavs are streaking or another team just gets really hot, but the spurs are consistently there at the top. Because they are solid top to bottom, they dont change players, coaches or systems often. Every one knows implicitly what there roles are, what there duties are and they are all men about it and accept responsibility when they fail.

There a lot to be said for paying dues and learning to win the right way and all that. I miss the Landry era and the pride that knowing we have had 1 coach in almost 30 years, We have been inconsistent as our coaches since Landry left.

Good, maybe we'll rehire Jimmy :)
Look at Washington, bring the Landry era hero out of retirement to coach again. Kinda makes you wonder. With Jimmy willing to let his hair up now, maybe hes a mellowing with age as they say and could come back. So long as hes all fire and brimstone like he was ole so many years ago, brings the asthma field back with him, I will take him.

Ash I am not sure of the exact quote but "go post in the asthma thread":D I agree with you that is the only Jimmy Johnson I would settle for. I don't see it happening though I think he has ran out of hard assedness.

Actually what I find interesting is rehiring of all the ex-coaches to be coordinators and assistants. I really think the orgs who do that have a leg up on other staffs...

Sometimes you can have too many cooks in the kitchen, but it's still a good thing to have a gang of knowledge available.

George Allen is the guys name you're thinking of...that's when the Skins/Boys rivalry really heated up
