No kidding!
Hollywood is terrified of, and allergic to, anything that doesn't come with previous version. It pretty much has to exist somewhere else for them to consider it nowadays. Unless some Big Name attaches themselves to an original concept. The studios execs, bean counters and shoe salesmen all, won't touch something otherwise.
I also find Superman to be one of the most boring superhero types around. They really have to work it hard to get anything challenging for him.
Frankly they should be terrified, the masses don't actually GO to independent, original features.
When tickets cost $15 - $20 bucks a pop, people are far less likely to risk the money on a film with little firepower behind it, but even before that, it's rare that the low budget film garners any major attention, regardless of how good a film it is.
I do agree, however, that Superman is pretty boring but that's also because he adheres to the classic hero type and the only great storyline (corrupted Superman) has already been done.
