so is holding in football cheating?

When Flotell tripped Tuck, was he cheating?

Did Michael Irvin cheat when he pushed off to gain an advantage, he broke the rules, what about a DB who holds/commits PI but is not called, is that cheating? If not, how is that different?

Henry reacted, handballed it and France scored. It wasn't cheating.

To me cheating is bribing an official, taking illegal performance enhancing drugs, etc

Yes, and he was fined accordingly

When Irvin pushed off back in the day it was completely within the rules of the game

Someone already explained to you the difference between incidentally breaking the rules trying to do something within the rules and blatantly breaking them.

Just because England hasn't won anything since 1966 is no reason to be bitter.

I always say re England, if they held World Cups between World Cups, England would be the champs.

England could be tough this time though. Should handle the US easily in their first game and I think they have a decent draw to the Final. Just don't go to a penalty shootout because you couldn't win one if the opponent had no goalie and couldn't take any shots against your goalie.

When was the last time Canada qualified for the WC?

what does that have to do with anything, we are crappy at soccer, we acknowledge it.

We are as bad at soccer as Norway is in hockey.

that is in the eye of the beholder

A hold or push off is no more incidental than a hand ball.

Again, don't blame Henry, one of the greatest players of his generation, blame the three refs who missed it.

It was blatant, he's even admitted it

Blatantly breaking the rules to gain an unfair advantage is cheating i don't know what kind of bizzaro world you live in the try and claim otherwise.

The definition of cheating:

v. cheat·ed, cheat·ing, cheats
v.tr.1. To deceive by trickery; swindle: cheated customers by overcharging them for purchases.
2. To deprive by trickery; defraud: cheated them of their land.
3. To mislead; fool: illusions that cheat the eye.
4. To elude; escape: cheat death.

v.intr.1. To act dishonestly; practice fraud.
2. To violate rules deliberately, as in a game: was accused of cheating at cards.
3. Informal To be sexually unfaithful: cheat on a spouse.
4. Baseball To position oneself closer to a certain area than is normal or expected: The shortstop cheated toward second base.

So don't blame the person who cheats, instead blame the referee who didn't catch him.

On that basis do you think it's not the criminal that's responsible for the crime, but the police force that fails to catch them?

As for England, I agree that we won't win it.
As you correctly point out we have a terrible record in Penalty shoot-outs, (only time I can remember us winning one was against Spain in 1996).

The only chance we might have on pens is if we get a shoot-out against the Dutch, their record is equally as bad. :D

isn't there an old adage, if you ain't "cheating" you ain't trying?

Henry might have said blatant handball (although I believe the first one was a normal human reaction) but he didn't say it was cheating. It was incidental to the game to use the words in other posts.

I just expect you and the other holier than thou types to call every penalty not called against the Cowboys next season "cheating". I have yet to see that when we aren't called for holding or PI, never once have I seen a poster say "we cheated to win".

I really like Holland's.
Brazil's home jersey is great as always. I like their away jersey too.
Slovenia's looks like something Charlie Brown would wear lol
