New Wrinkles in the Offense

I had said earlier before the year started i was intrigued and hoped they would implement just a couple of times a game the read option, i want to reiterate ONLY a couple times a game to threaten and keep a defense off balance. Cowboys ran it a couple times tonight:

Daks TD run was one time they ran it
Zeke had a nice pickup another time

The Read Options and Bootlegs Set up the :

60 yarder Zeke broke since the DE hesitated to make sure Dak didn't bootleg and the seas parted

Misdirection has been awesome - Defenses are guessing against this Offense and our line is too good to be guessing against.

Awesome new wrinkle that we use in the perfect dose per game to keep a defense honest

IMO if you start running a lot of read/option as a team and is considered a tendency you get your young QB killed a la RG3

The SNF pregame show had a beautiful illustration of Zeke's 60 yard run. The bootleg action threat pulled the Bengals so wide .. and opened up that huge hole. Dak is doing so much more than what he's being credited for by many.

I love me some Romo but we will lose this wrinkle when he comes back but we will gain other things too .

The plays are great, but it certainly helps to have a guy like Dak who executes on third downs.

I LOVE how they're utilizing Lucky Whitehead. Got a nice little scheme centered around him, with the jet sweep, run off tackle, and fake sweep ---> screen.

I agree if you do it too much but the bootlegs also force defenders to defend them
I don't think we will be running the read option 20 times a game but just a couple forces teams to defend it

You're absolutely right that that's the key. We run the play from time to time as a wrinkle as you put it, unlike the Commanders who based much of their offense on it as a way to transition RGIII into the league.

Even the bootlegs are starting to get dangerous. IMO Dallas has been running them too much or running them specifically out of a handful of formations which makes it predicatable. Teams are catching up to the naked boot.

I agree but Dak is not RGIII. He's not nearly as dynamic in the open field as Bob. He's also built like a cement mixer.

Dak did get plastered on one of those today.

Unfortunately another QB built like that, Steve McNair took too many shots because he though he could. I am not saying baby the kid but I have notice that he has started to stand in the pocket until the last second a lot also. It looks like this kid is the future I just hope the coaches try and keep him from developing some bad habits.

Living in Skins country, I was privileged to hear analysis on that while Griffin was in DC. The read option plays kept him safe. He was hit the least on plays where he passed because they were designed to have him unload the bsll quickly or hand it off most of the time.

He actually got hurt when scrambling on designed pass plays or hanging in the pocket too long. Griffin does a poor job of protecting himself. His rookie year success was a fluke and was primarily due to Kyle Shanahan protecting his flaws and accentuating his positives in a very basic offense.

With that said, Dak is not a fluke because the Cowboys run a real offense with a very occasional RPO as a change up. Dak will be fine running these plays from time to time as long as he's decisive and slides at the end of his runs/gets out of bounds.

The coaches deserve a lot of credit this year.
When plays are executed correctly the coaches look like geniuses. When they don't.....look like idiots. Part of job description. Hardest part is to train your players to execute what you want.

But didn't it become a "thing" to drill the QB even if he handed the ball off on those zone reads, as a way to help eliminate the threat of the QB holding onto that ball before deciding whether to take it or give it to the RB? Maybe RGIII didn't take a lot of hits that way, but it does seem like an element that exists to put the QB in danger if you want to run this sort of play in excess.
