NEWMAN - What is his deal

Newman plays zone and starts 10 yards off the receiver almost every play. This isn't by choice, it's by Mike Zimmer. If you have a great cornor, why do you cripple him by playing him in this fashon?

If you have a saftey that struggles in deep coverage, plays GREAT closer to the line of scrimmage why do you line him up 20 yards deep in coverage?

If you know the Fullback/Runningback/H-back is always open for a 10+ yard gain out of the backfield on ANY given play, why don't you adjust your defense to cover that?

If you have a guy who excels at the pass rush, why do you make him stop and check for the run first on oibvious passing downs?

Unfortunately these along with yours' are unanswered questions we will have to deal with as long as our current coaching regime is in place.

I seriously thought things would get better once Campo was gone. Geez.

In my opinion Newman is the second best player on this defense (after Ware) with Ferguson the third best.

Why aren't we talking the dregs of the earth on defense like:

Canty
Spears
James
Roy

?

Newman is the 2nd best by default, after him, Fergy, and Ware we're pitiful. Canty is too tall and just can't get it done at the NFL level, Spears was a busttttttt, James is average but just has a good story behind him, and Roy fills up highlight reels with big hits but I think hes outta shape.

I never said he was bad. I think he is easily one of the best cornors in the league. I just don't beleive the coaching staff is putting him in position to make the plays he has the ability to make.

Remember, you could be the fastest long distance runner in the world, but if the Olympics are being played in Germany, yet your running coach just flew you into Sydney Australia, you arn't winning ... Well you get the idea.

There's a few reasons why he doesn't get more picks.

1. They don't throw his way much, so he doesn't get as many opportunities.

2. He's mediocre at locating the ball in the air. Something that is a trait of EVERY defensive back that we've drafted while Zimmer has been a D-Coordinator. The only guys that locate the ball in the air well are Aaron Glenn (we didn't draft) and Anthony Henry (we didn't draft).

3. Lack of a pass rush gives him less opportunities for bad passes or bad decisions made by opposing QB's.

Allowing one catch -- which doesn't even lead to a first down -- is a bad game?

Nobody is in Champs class. He is the #1 rated corner, barnone. T-New is solid, but he needs to make the most of the opportunities he does get. Champ doesn't see too many balls his way either, but when they do come, he makes the QB pay.

What did Champ do in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 when quarterbacks threw at him? He averaged just 2.75 interceptions per season, never had more than three in a season, never returned one for a touchdown, never even returned one more than 12 yards (his average return was 1.5 yards) and got beaten quite a bit.

Before this season, Newman had at least three picks every year, which is actually pretty good for a shutdown cornerback.

Is he a great or good corner. I know, they never throw is way blah blah blah. EVERY game I wait for him to make a game changing play, but it never happens. I know he is not the problem but I was really hoping he would develop into a player that could change the outcome of the game.

Newman is taking half the field away, Id say hes earning his keep.
