Newman's Play

I've been (mostly) away from the forum for a couple of days so if this has been discussed I missed it. But did anyone else notice the excellent game that Newman had?

He got the INT to break Plummer's streak and set up a TD drive for us. He recovered the fumble to set up another TD for us. He had several pass breakups including what was nearly another INT. He did not give up any deep passes and only gave up a couple of quick slants inside which are almost impossible to cover without underneath help. And he was the one who ran down Dayne from behind (coming from the far side of the field) to prevent him from getting a TD. True it didn't stop them from getting the field goal but at least it gave us a shot at blocking it which we would not have had if Dayne had scored. Newman really showed up as a force in this game.

To some extent it has.

Many seem to think (as do I) that Newman is definitely pro-bowl material this year.

Others seem to think that Henry is better... I don't see the logic in that but I respect their opinions on the matter.

Dont you know, we dont praise pple on the board, we tear em down and rip em apart. Even if there good. Like Bledsoe and Jones. No good post allowed here, whats wrong with you man. Dont forget, we Cowboy fans wallow in misery and look for negitives in the game to come here and post on the board. We cant be happy with with a good players making plays. Dont ever want to see a good post here again by you, make them all negitive, we dont want to piss off the majority of posters that like it negitive here you know.

As good as he played its the dropped INT that really sticks out in my mind as much as i hate to think and say it. He makes that pick he goes untouched into the endzone, and the pro bowl for that matter.

I've just been going crazy with how well TNew has been playing this year! Not only does he seem like a totally different player from last year, he seems like he's starting to hit like Roy! Half the time a big hit comes and I'm surprised as all hell to see #41 emerging from the rubble instead of #31.

I'd easily call him one of the top 5 in the league, atleast the nfc, this year. Perhaps even our defensive MVP on the team, so far.

he's going to the probowl anyway...the fans might not stand up and take notice, but the coaches and players will...the guy is liek glue

as for the dropped pick...again, the ball was thrown extremely wobbly and behind him...that would have been a tough catch for a WR, let along a guy who plays CB

Morning Winkles.

No one said Newman cost us the game.

I was however sick that he couldn't hold onto that gift-wrapped game-winning INT. Unlike some posters who ignore the play it was the exact same type of play Roy Williams did make in Philly.

Newman is playing as well as any DB in the league this year, but he was oh- so-close to establishing himself on the national stage as the game-changing Pro Bowl player he was thought to be when he was drafted 3 years ago.

Roll your eyes at those comments if you wish, but I guarantee you Newman, Parcells and our coaches expect our guys to make those plays when they are served up to them like that ball was served up by Plummer.

How could you not.

That performance is what we have been waiting for and should hope to expect many more times in the future.

The only thing that kept that from being a perfect game is that he dropped the interception late that could have iced the win.

that throw was nowhere near as "good" as McNabb's...if you think it was you need to go back and compare the passes...RW's ball was a perfect spiral thrown right to him, whereas Newman "jumped" the route and had to try to catch a wobbly ball thrown BEHIND him...even WR's dont always make that catch, and go ask any WR which is easier to catch (spiral or wobbler) and probably 99.999% are going to say the tight spiral

Man... I wish he'd caught it too, obviously. But it's not like it was a soft lob that he just totally booted. Like he said on the radio after the game, he was breaking hard on the WR and the ball just flashed behind him faster than he expected.

Of course, he still said he should have made the play, because he's a stand-up guy. But it wasn't like a total choke job, at least not IMO.

I kind of considered that his fumble recovery made up for it. When Roy hit Anderson and the ball was going for the sideline, I thought it was easily going out of bounds, and then someone came from nowhere to recover it inbounds. That was a pretty athletic play, really.

Thank you David but I tried to explain this yesterday. Didn't work.

Yes - he probably should have made the play, it wasn't the easiest catch in the world, but perhaps he could have caught it.

Missing a 33 yd filed goal on the other hand is totally inexcusable.

He still should have picked it off. Great teams and seasons are built on plays being made just like this.

They're also ruined on missed chipshot field goals.

David,

Roy is not considered to have good hands and he caught a fast ball thrown over his head. Between the two passes that is the pass I would have expected to be dropped.
But when a CB "jumps" a route he's looking for the pass and he expects to make the big play. Newman didn't make it, Roy did.

Of course there have been and will continue to be as long as they play the games, numerous plays that we can say "woulda, shoulda, coulda". I still haven't gotten over Jackie Smith. :)

I just think some people are way too sensitive about criticisms of players. That's what a place like this is for. If it's done in the right tone and spirit, (unlike Rack's over-the-top attack on Petitti), it shouldn't hurt someone's feelings.

Some people in here wouldn't make it if they ever had to sit through a Monday morning film session and hear a coach chew you out in front of everyone for the plays you missed and the plays you messed up. Coaches do that to kids in high school, what do you think is expected of NFL players making millions of dollars a year?

True.

And we aren't and this isn't.

Still too many holes.
