Love Newman. We are fortunate to have him. The play in the fourth was unfortunate, but this young man is having an outstanding season. Good to see him get such positive recognition.

...was in for 24 pass plays of which he defended two passes and made one interception.

He really only had one negative play, the fumble on the punt return which he recovered. The missed interception was exactly that. Not a missed TD.

He did not lose the game for us, but he missed an opportunity to "ice" the game for us.

The person who lost the game was the one who left three points on the field that day. Those were the only real points left off the scoreboard.

Field goal kicking is an activity designed for maximum success. There protection, the ball is on the ground stable and it's a routine so common that every team uses the same variation of procedure to accomplish it.

Also to make matters worse it was in a range where this year's FG kickers have held a 98% avg. in success rate. Based on NFL.com even a player such as Jason Elam has a lifetime 97% avg. at this range.

Cundiff's been perfect under 40 yards, but on turf in a protected stadium for the go ahead points you have to be perfect. There's too many games to be played in bad weather on grass to give up on kicks like this one.

He has to focus more sharply on these attempts. They are expectations that he has to live with if he wants to be employed in the future.

If the league average for FGs under 40 yards is 98%, then the Cowboys must account for the other 2%. Cundiff and Cortez have both missed gimmes that cost Dallas 3 games. Against Washington, Cortez missed a FG that would have given Dallas a 16-0 lead going into the 4th. We lost 14-13 instead. Against Seattle, Cortez missed a FG that would have given Dallas a 13-3 lead over Seattle in the 4th. We lost 13-10 instead. Against Denver, Dallas would have had a 24-21 lead over Denver had it not been for a missed Cundiff FG.

So, I will reiterate my point that I made about a month ago; a good kicker adds 3-4 wins to your final record and is important enough to justify a high draft pick. If we had a kicker the caliber of Janikowski or Vanderjadt, the Cowboys would probably be 10-1 right now.

...clarify. The league wide avg. for FGs under 40 is 90% when you factor out kicks missed on natural grass then it is 98%. Both Cortez and Cundiff missed their kicks on artificial field and yes they directly contributed to the 2% along with Paul Edinger and Rian Lindell. Over the past four years if you would have categorized the careers of these four kickers, (Cundiff doens't have 4 yrs of service) you wouldn't be far if you used the word "inconsistent".
