In the marketing business quite often an "avatar" is developed representing the very best perspective customer for a particular product or service. "Male" or "Female" wouldn't do it I'm afraid... just a wee-bit too expansive.

The Kardashians are only a piece of the bigger popularity mystery comprising so-called reality television. Along with the Kardashians, I can honestly say I do not understand or have watched other shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, Big Brother, The Housewives of <insert city>, etc. I don't get it. There is no reality. It's contrived fiction. Why the pretense? Soap operas never pretended to be reality. Even so, "reality television" has replaced soap operas in popularity. Has western civilization evolved to a stage where fake fiction as entertainment is necessary for enjoyment?

There's one over here, The Only Way Is Essex (I think), that follows the real lives and relationships of over the top "personalities" and has made loads of reality tv celebrities. They're famous for endearing qualities like being attractive, cheating on their partners on tv or not knowing how to tell the time with anything other than a digital watch. It actually has a disclaimer come up on the screen at the start of the show "some scenes have been created for your entertainment"
How is that not a contradiction?
