Rating the Cowboys Draft

Filed under: Uncategorized — newyscruggs @ 1:34 am

Here is the question you should ask about the Cowboys 2008 draft: Are they better?

Did GM Jerry Jones make his 13-3 club better?

Yes. Yes indeed.

Look at four positions on the Cowboys that got better:

1. Running back
They want the change of pace Felix Jones brings. He will be a better player than Julius Jones was last season. Jones is also an explosive kick return man. He helps you on offense and special teams and that makes him an ungrade over Julius Jones.

Tashard Choice can be an everydown back. If Marion Barber got hurt, Choice would be the choice to replace him. He led the ACC in rushing two years in a row with average quarterback play at Georgia Tech.

The 08 backfield of Barber, Felix Jones, and Choice is an upgrade over the 07 group of Julius Jones, Barber, and Tyson Thompson.

Cornerback
Mike Jenkins should have been a top 15 pick. Don’t forget the Cowboys got Pacman Jones for a 4th round pick.

Jenkins and Pacman are better than last year’s nickel and dime men Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones.

Tight End
Jason Witten is the man, but the man needs a backup.

Bill Parcells wanted Anthony Fasano and gave up a 4th to get a guy he drafted in the 2nd round a few years ago. We call that a reach. Fasano never gave the club enough production. Oh by the way he dropped a touchdown pass in the loss to the Giants.

Tony Curtis had become a better red zone threat.

Martellus Bennett gives Tony Romo a huge target in the red zone at 6-7. As a former college hoops player he will post up DB’s for scores all day like Antonio Gates does for the Chargers.

Did I mention he can block?

The tight end position just got a lot better.

Special Teams
Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, and Pacman Jones can all return punts and kickoffs. This gives the Cowboys plenty of options.

I'll be honest, I wasn't happy with a couple of our selections this weekend. Now that the initial shock and disappointment has subsided, and I can look at everything from a more objective position, we certainly improved our team from last year.

The one area that scares the hell out of me is WR. If T.O. gets injured we are screwed. Screwed! I'm sure4 Jerry did everything in his power to trade for a vet WR, and I realize that the value wasn't there in the draft (however Manningham going to the Giants in the 3rd *or was it 4th?* is a little sickening),but this is a scary situation.

One SMALL bit of solace is looking back at the Patriots teams that won 3 Super Bowls. No one on their WR roster were superstars. Even Deon Branch (who ended up as a SB MVP) was nothing special. In fact, after he won the SB MVP award, signed a large contract and went back to being just a guy.

It helps a little to think in those terms, but that situation is still scary.

QB scares me more. I have more faith in Crayton and Stanback than I do Brad Johnson. Terry Glenn may also be back.

Can't argue that at all, Atl.

If and that is a big IF, Terry Glenn could give us 1 more year at his former level of play, then GOD continues to shine on his Cowboys -- just like he did back in 03 & looked down on us and saw our need for a QB. It just took the Cowboys a while to realize the "franchise" QB we looking for was Moxie.

OMG A VOICE OF REASON!!!!!!! HELLO!!!!

This was an outstanding draft for Dallas because they literally upgraded every position of need via the draft and free agency..

Keep an eye out on Bowman, who was just signed as a UDFA... T.O. comes to mind when you see him dominate on the field.

If Romo gets hurt we are up a creek without a paddle but teams with franchise QBs have that sad story. There aren't enough decent QBs for each team to have one much less for most teams to have 2.

I am hoping we can get the cast off from Tampa Bay when cuts are announced.

It also helps when you know what the other team will run:laugh2:

Unfortunately, Bowman will be wearing puke green.
